PLATO’S THEORY OF IMITATION

ART AS MIMESIS
ART IS JUST A COPY OF THE TRUTH, THEREFORE,
FOR HIM, LITERATURE AND POETRY ARE NOT
TRUE, THEY ARE JUST IMITATIONS OF IDEAL
ALL THINGS THAT EXIST IN THIS WORLD ARE
COPIES OF THE ORIGINAL AND TRUE ENTITIES IN
A WORLD OF FORMS.
ALL ART FORMS ARE REPLICAS OF IDEA AND
DANGEROUS
ARISTOTLE: ART AS REPRESENTATION
DISAPPROVES PLATO’S THEORY
ART IS AN AGENT ON REVEALING THE TRUTH
IMITATION IS IN-BORN AND IT IS IMITATIONS
THAT ENABLES THE CHILD TO LEARN
PLATO vs ARISTOTLE
POETRY
Plato: Poetry destroys the mind of youth
because it is immoral. Philosophy is better
because it deals with truth while Poetry deals
with illusions
Aristotle: believes that poetry results to having
emotions such as: fear, pain, pity, etc..
This is called “CATHARSIS”
KANT: ART FOR ART SAKE
Art should be separated from other
considerations.
Judgement of any art forms should not focus on
the external moral aspect or political morality.
Aesthetic impression is to be valued.
Art should stand independently and should be
free from scrutiny
Art should stand for beauty alone
