FUNCTIONS AND

PHILOSOPHICAL
PERSPECTIVE ON
ART
Greek philosopher Aristotle claimed
that every particular substance in the
world has an end, or telos in Greek,
which translates into "purpose." Every
substance, defined as a formed
matter, moves according to a fixed
path toward its aim.
This telos, according to Aristotle, is intricately linked with
function. For a thing to reach its purpose, it also has to
fulfill its function. Man, in Aristotle's view of reality, is
bound to achieve a life of fulfillment and happiness, or in
Greek, eudaimonia. All men move toward this final end.
Moreover, the telos and function of a thing are both related
to a thing's identity. What makes a table a table the fact that
it does perform its function and thereby reaching its telos.
The telos, the function, and the "whatness" of a thing are all
interconnected.

FUNCTION OF ART
Function - the
role or purpose for which something designed or
created.
Function of Art are classified as:
1. PERSONAL FUNCTIONS - need for self-expression
2. SOCIAL FUNCTION - convey message of protest, contestation, or
any message the artists intends to carry - convey a message that will
benifit the society
3. PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS - artworks that are crafted or built to serve
some Physical Purposes - artwork can be used for practical purpose
because of their physical structure.
Arts that have a Physical Functions:
• ARCHITECTURE
• INDUSTRIAL DESIGNING
• GRAPHIC DESIGNING
• INTERIOR DESIGNING
OTHER FUNCTIONS OF ART
Today, music has expanded its function and coverage. Music is
listened to and made by people for reasons that were foreign to
early civilizations. There is now a lot of music that has no
connection whatsoever to dance or religion. Serenade is one
example. People composes hymns of love to express feelings
and emotions. Music is also used as wonderful accompaniment
to stage plays and motion pictures. Interestingly, piece of
music can mean a multitude of meanings to different people,
proof that as an art, music has gone a long way.
DOES ART ALWAYS HAVE TO
BE FUNCTIONAL?
The value of a work of art does not depend on function
but on the work itself. A functional object cannot be
claimed to be beautiful unless it can perform its function
sufficiently. Consider a house that cannot even protect its
resident from the nasty weather outside or a spoon that
spills the food on it. Adequate performance of function
partly determines the beauty of a design in these
functional art forms.
PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE
ON ART
Art as an Imitation
Plato (2000) in his master masterpiece. The republic particularly
paints a picture artists as imitators and art as mere imitation. In
his description of the ideal republic, Plato advices against the
inclusion of art as a subject in curriculum and the banning of
artists in republic.
In Plato's metaphysics or veiw or reality. The things in this world
are only copies of the original, the enternal, and. The true entities
that can be only found in world of forms.
Art as a Representation
Art of representation - Aristotle, Plato's most important
student in philosophy, agreed with his teacher that art is a
form of imitation. However in contrast to the disguist that his
master holds for art. Aristotle considered art as an to
philosophy in reaveling truth. The kind of imitation that art
does is not antithecal to the reaching of fundamental truths in
the world. Talking about tragedies.
For example: Aristotle (1902) in the poetics claimed that poetry
is a literary represent -ation in general.
Art as a Disinterested Judgment
In the third critique the Immanuel Kant wrote the "critique of
judgement" it's mean the judgement of beauty the
cornerstone of art.kant mentioned that judgment of beauty
and therefore art is innately autonomous from specific
interests. Kant recognized that judgment of beauty is
subjective. There is something in the work of art that's make
it capable of inciting the same feeling of pleasure and
satisfaction from any perceiver regardless of his condition.
For example 'that is a beautiful sunset ' first they are
disinterested meaning that we take pleasure in something
because we judge it beautiful rather than judging it beautiful
because we find it pleasurable
Art as a communication of emotion
The author of war and peace and Anna Karenina is "Leo
Tolstoy" provided another perspective on what art is in his
book what is art (2016) Tolstoy defended the production of
the sometimes truly extravagant art like operas despite
extreme poverty in the world.
Art plays a huge role in communication to it's audience's
emotion's.art then servers as a language a communication device
that articulates feeling and emotions in listening to music in
watching opera and in reading poem. Art is central to man's
existing because it's makes accessible feelings and emotions.art
serves as a mechanism of cohesion for everyone.one can
commune with early Cambodian and their struggles by visiting
the Angkor wat to feel the early royalties of different Korean
dynasty by watching Korean dramas an early example is the
byzantine mosaic in the basilica of San Vitale in Italy that
connects roman rule and religion
