Introduction to solar
energy
• Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed
using a range of technologies such as solar power to generate
electricity, solar thermal energy
• THIS LAYER IS
RESPONSIBLE FOR
TRAPPING SOLAR ENERGY
WHICH CONVERTS INTO
ELECTRICITY.
Back Sheet
A back sheet is essentially a layer of protection applied as a sort of heavy-duty sticker onto the back of the board to protect it from
contact with electronic elements and make it easier to maneuver.
Aluminum Frame
We then have the aluminum frame. Aluminum works best to complete the solar panel because it’s light and strong.
Electrical Components
The electrical components of a solar panel include the junction box and the interconnector. You can affix the junction box to the back of
the board onto the back sheets
FATHER OF SOLAR POWER
In 1839 solar hit its first milestone when Edmond Becquerel (in the portrait to the left) discovered the photovoltaic
(PV) effect, becoming the “father of solar energy” at only 19 years old. The photovoltaic effect is a process that
generates an electric current when certain materials are exposed to sunlight.
In the mid 1900's the collective efforts of Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and Gerald Pearson resulted in the
development of the first functioning silicon solar cell. They were able to achieve 11% efficiency with a cell the size
of a small coin, and became the first to successfully convert sunlight into usable power.
Edmond Becquerel
• According to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, utility-scale solar power produces between 394
and 447 MWh per acre per year. Thus, an acre of solar panels producing zero-emissions electricity saves
between 267,526 to 303,513 pounds, or 121 to 138 metric tons, of carbon dioxide per year.
• Every kilowatt of green energy can reduce your carbon footprint by 3,000 pounds annually. So, even a 5KW
solar plant can save approximately 15,000 pounds of CO2 every year, making huge contributions in
protecting our environment from global warming and related issues.
Conclusion
• The push to shift to renewable energy sources is becoming more obvious each year. The ultimate goal is to
stop the dependency on fossil fuels and create a limitless and low-cost green energy supply.
• Therefore, solar energy is a much cleaner and more sustainable alternative to non-renewable sources like
fossil fuels. An increasingly viable and affordable substitute for mining and burning fossil fuels is directly
harvesting sunlight to generate electricity.
