QUARTER III – Module 4

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH
AND SAFETY IN
IRRIGATION WORKS
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Introduction
OHS includes the laws, standards, and
programs that are aimed at making the
workplace better for workers, along
with co-workers, family members,
customers, and other stakeholders.

KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN

Occupational health and safety
standards are in place to mandate the
removal, reduction, or replacement of
job site hazards.

KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN

Introduction
OHS programs should also include
material that helps minimize the
effects of the hazards. Employers and
company management are obliged to
provide a safe working environment for
all their employees.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Many hazards are present in the farm.
If the farmers are not aware of these
hazards these may cause injury to
their body or may cause diseases and
even death. Farmer should always
apply appropriate safety measures
while working in the farm.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
In this lesson the students with the
guidance and supervision of their teacher
should identify farm works that involve the
use of chemicals and hazardous tools and
equipment; determine the uses of Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) and determine
farm emergency procedures regarding
safety working environment.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Irrigation Safety
Just because an irrigation system
and related equipment works
doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe or
will fail in a safe manner.

KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN

To ensure safety during operation,
maintenance, inspection and testing of
systems, employees must be aware of
the potential hazards they might be
exposed to and understand safe work
practices necessary around these
systems.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
General Safety Training

KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Irrigation Safety
Irrigation systems move and deliver
water that is vital for the survival of
agricultural crops. Moving equipment,
electricity, water pressure, pumping
systems, and field conditions related to
irrigation and agriculture require
workers to follow safety protocols.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
To be safe, read the operator’s manual and
receive training for each irrigation system
and specific equipment components that
you use and maintain.
Follow all of the manufacturer’s
suggestions for inspection, maintenance,
and repair schedules and procedures.

KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN

Some general safety guidelines include:
 Reading and understand the Danger,
Warning, and Caution signs on all
equipment parts.
 Wearing personal protective equipment
such as sturdy boots, coveralls, gloves,
and a hardhat. Add hearing and eye
protection if needed.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Properly inspect and maintain the irrigation
systems. Make sure to report and repair
malfunctioning systems. Look for the
following:
 Low tire pressure and damage.
 Signs of sprinkler blockage or breakage.
 Problems with end gun flows that maintain
appropriate water pressure in the system.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
 Problems with debris in systems. If
necessary, flush the system to remove
debris.
 Deficient levels of lubrication.
 Water or fluid leaks.
 Barriers in the field that could halt or
hinder system movement.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Follow proper lockout tagout practices
to control unsafe startup or power to
the irrigation equipment each time
you perform maintenance or repair.
Remember that equipment can be
controlled locally, remotely, or on
timers. Never assume that equipment
that is turned off will stay off.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
 Pay attention to potential hazards when applying
lockout tagout:
  Fix the main machine control to the off position.
  Control mechanical hazards such as center drives,
overhead hazards, tires, rotation, and engines.
  Control power to the motor, tower boxes, and
wiring.
  Control water systems to the sprinklers, end guns,
pumps, and pipeline.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Use extreme caution around overhead
power lines when installing,
maintaining, and using irrigation
systems. Accidental contact of water
spray, the piping, or the power units
with electrical lines can cause severe
electric shock injuries and death.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Things to consider are:
 Make sure all equipment is properly wired and
grounded.
 Know where power lines are located and their
heights.
 Know the heights of the towers and the
heights and lengths of the piping system.
 Maintain proper clearances from power lines
at all times.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
 When clearing pipes, keep them
horizontal, don’t lift them vertical where
they could meet with power lines.
 Note that extreme weather can move your
equipment and power lines, so always survey
the work area after a storm.
 If power lines do meet with any part of the
system, contact the power company
immediately and evacuate the area.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Some final safety precautions around field
irrigation systems can keep you safe on the
job:
 Keep the system’s traveling path free of
objects and people at all times.
 Never climb on the machine; use proper
ladders for access.
 Walk behind or in the opposite direction of
the system to prevent a collision.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
 Know where your hands and feet are
at all times to avoid caught and crush
injuries near the moving equipment.
 Practice field safety when working in
high temperatures outdoors
 Minimize exposure to the sun, insects,
and cold.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
 Be CPR and First Aid certified and
know your emergency procedures.
 Use good body postures and lifting
techniques to avoid strains and sprains.
Using these techniques will prevent
injuries and perhaps save a life while
using irrigation systems.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
Irrigation Equipment Safety
 The following suggestions are aimed at ensuring the safety of
the irrigator as well as preventing damage to the equipment.
1. Read and follow directions in the owner's
manual for each piece of equipment, paying
particular attention to the safety
precautions and features listed. Make sure
that all employees also read and understand
all directions and precautions.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
2. Store irrigation pipe at least 100
feet from overhead powerlines.
3. Look overhead and note electric
power lines that are within reach of
the long pipes. When Lifting and
transporting the pipe sections, keep
clear of the power lines.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
4. Avoid moving irrigation
equipment on windy days when
pipes could be blown into nearby
power lines and keep pipes
horizontal to the ground rather than
vertical to minimize the risk of
contact with power lines.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
5. Be certain that moving irrigation equipment
will not contact buildings, power lines, poles,
wires, etc.
6. Disconnect electric power before servicing a
machine by personally shutting off and locking
the master control. Also make sure that everyone
is clear of the machine before it is turned back
on.
7. Stay away from the equipment during an
electrical storm
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
8. When working with irrigation hydrants and
valve openers care must be taken to prevent a
sudden release of water pressure which could
cause severe injury. When setting valve openers
onto field irrigation hydrants make sure the valve
opener locking lever is swiveled far enough
clockwise to lock it onto the hydrant ears. Always
do a quick visual check to make sure the valve
opener is locked onto the hydrant ears before
turning the water on or off.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
9. Stay out of the way of high-pressure
water streams, such as end guns.
10.Protect electric motors from
overload, overheating, overvoltage,
undervoltage, phase imbalance in
three-phase electrical systems, phase
failure, low current or high current.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
11.Be sure the engines used to power
pumps are equipped with safety
devices that will stop them before
damage occurs from overload,
overheating, loss of oil pressure or
runaway (if pump becomes
disconnected or loses its prime).
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
12.Be sure all pumps are equipped
with devices that will shut off the
electric motor or engine if there is a
break in the suction or loss of pressure
in the main pipeline.
13.To perform overhead maintenance,
use a ladder that is sufficiently tall as
well as stable.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
14.Have qualified service personnel perform
any hazardous repair or maintenance.
15.Keep all guards and shields in place,
especially those covering power-take-off
units.
16.Make sure that service or auxiliary
equipment is not in the path of the
irrigation system.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
17.Bury all power lines around the
equipment, and clearly mark where they
are buried.
18.Keep away from moving parts when
equipment is in operation.
19.If fuses or circuit breakers keep
blowing, don't "correct" by over-fusing.
Find the cause.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
20.Do not irrigate at air temperatures
below 40F. Spraying has a cooling
effect, and the water can freeze even
though the temperature is above 32F.
21.Periodically check the system for
any loose or missing bolts, which could
cause collapse of the equipment.
KENNEDY B. SADORRA - ARBOLEDA NHS - ALCALA, PANGASINAN
22.Know what to do should an
emergency situation occur, and also
instruct all employees on what to do.
23.If chemicals have been added to the
irrigation water, avoid exposure to spray
drift; and make sure that the spray does
not blow past the area of intended
operation.
