INTRODUCTION
Conventional Civil engineering structures are designed on the basis of two main
criteria that are strength (damageability or ultimate limit state) and rigidity
(serviceability limit state).
In case of earthquake resistant design, a new demand must be added to the
capacity to deform beyond the elastic range, and to dissipate seismic energy
through plastic deformations.
So, the ductility check is related to the control of whether the structure is able
a) Beams shall have at least two 12 mm diameter bars each at the top and
bottom faces.
b) Minimum longitudinal steel ratio ρmin required on any face at any section
is:
Maximum longitudinal steel ratio ρmax provided on any face at any section
is 0.025.
Transverse Reinforcement (Cl. 6.3.1)
Only vertical links shall be used in beams (Fig. 2A); inclined links shall not be
used. And,
a) in normal practice, a link is made of a single bent bar. But, it may be made of
two bars also, namely a U-link with a 135°
b) factored gravity shear force, plus equilibrium shear force when plastic hinges
are formed at both ends of the beam (Fig. 3)
Similarly, the design shear force demand at end B shall be the larger of the
