Purpose of Orders
The purpose of orders is to ensure that all those involved in an
operation know:

1. The Commander’s aim.


2. How he intends to achieve that aim.
3. What part the person receiving the orders is to play in his plan.

Types of Orders
1. Warning Orders:
These are orders providing early warning of future intentions. Warning orders are delivered in order
to allow for maximum battle preparation and concurrent activity.

2. Formal Orders:
These are given personally by the commander and give him the opportunity to put his wishes to all of
his subordinates at the same time and to answer any questions they may have immediately.

3. Quick Battle Orders (QBO’s)


QBO’s are issued when immediate action is required. They are most likely to be used at section and
platoon level. QBO’s comprise hasty attack and hasty defence orders.

4. Radio Orders
These are brief orders given over the radio. Secure Orders Cards or SOCs can be used but are more
suited to armoured operations.

5. Operation Orders (Op Orders)

Op Orders are detailed, comprehensive orders usually issued either in writing, as a signal or as a
map overlay.

Orders Process
The orders process is as follows:

a. A commander must Receive orders himself from his superior


commander.

b. He must then Extract from those orders, the details that are
relevant to his own command.

c. An Estimate must be conducted in order that the commander


can come up with his own plan.

d. The commander must then Prepare Orders for his own


subordinates.

e. Finally he Issues Orders to his subordinates.

Receiving Orders
Before receiving orders a commander should do the following:
a. Study the Warning Order from his superior Commander.
b. Complete his own time and mission analyses and a map study.
c. Issue his own Warning Order.
d. Arrive early at his superior commander’s O Group to study any
traces, air photos, models and to mark his own map.
e. He must take the following with him to the O Group:
1. Map
2. Notebook & Pencil
3. TAM
4. Binos, Compass and torch if applicable.
5. Radio.
