I. Introduction
Context and justification:
With the scourge of the Fruit flies that hits the region, ECOWAS and
UEMOA have initiated in 2014,, the “Fruit fly Project” (PLMF) funded by
the UE, AFD and CEDEAO

 Implementation of a surveillance and control system within 11 out of the

5 Evolution of exports and interceptions at the end of 2018

I. Introduction…
Context and justification cont….:
 Capacity of actors (public et private)  Evolution of exports and interceptions at the end of
2018 on EU borders

Formation dans un verger pilot

 11 National Committees (public / private actors) in place and functional

Due to lack of time, the developed techniques were not fully finalized and widely
disseminated; surveillance system not consolidated and implemented on 11 ECOWAS
member states.
SyRIMAO to consolidate and amplify PLMFs’ achievements
6 Specifically:

I. Introduction…
 Brief presentation of SyRIMAO:
General Objective :Improve producers’ incomes, particularly small producers, to
contribute to food security, poverty reduction and job creation.

Specifically:
 Regional and national research systems and their coordination are strengthened to
provide producers with efficient control techniques with low environmental impact

 Fruits and vegetables production losses due to insects pest infestation, fruit flies in
particular are controlled

 The mango sector at national and regional levels is strengthened and

 An operational and sustainable monitoring and alert system is in place covering all
member countries.
7

 Brief presentation of SyRIMAO…

Expected results: Sustainability of the System

R1: The national and regional phytosanitary research and control systems work in a coordinated
manner and the results of research are disseminated and made available to producers to carry
out effective, efficient and sustainable fruit flies control;

R2: The mango sector is structured at national and regional level and interactions between
public and private actors are strengthened to ensure sustainability of funding dedicated to
monitoring and control;

R3: Fruit fly surveillance is organized on a multi-stakeholder partnership basis, at the national
level, coordinated at the regional level, and allows effective and targeted alert control with
sustainable control methods.
