Addition and Subtraction of
decimals and Mixed number
Directions: Copy the words and supply the missing
word and corresponding number.

Ex.: 472.95
The 5 in the hundredths place means 5 /100
1. 11.256
The 2 in the Tenths
_____________ 2/10
place means _____
2. 98.356
The 6 in the
Thousandths 6/1000

4. 15.15413 Hundred
2/100000
Thousanths place means _____
The 3 in the _____________

5. 42 171.326
Tens
The 7 in the _____________ place means _____70
How are you going to add 0.845 and 0.750?

Since thousandths must be added to thousandths,

hundredths must be added to hundredths, tenths to tenths,
and ones to ones, it is important to “have the decimal
points in line.”

Line up the decimals. Add: 0.845

+ 0.750
1.595
Always place the decimal point in the answer exactly below
the decimal points of the addends. The total is 1.595.
Writing decimals in words
Ones Decimal Tenths Hundredths Thousandths
point
1 . 5 9 5

1. Read the digits to the left of the decimals

point as a whole number.
2. Say “and” for the decimal point.
3. Read the digits to the right of the decimal
point as a whole number.
4. Say the place name of the last digit on the
right.
Arrange the following in column then
add.

1. 45.0246 + 0. 2323 = 45.2569

2. 0. 2935 + 1. 3799 = 1.6734
3. 23.5675 + 0.53 = 24.0975
4. 327.599 + 45.3333 = 372.9323
5. 95.678 + 89.5021 = 185.1801
Arrange in column then add.

1) 0.12 + 0.132 + 0.3231 = 0.5751

2) 0.1323 + 0.05 + 0.5010 = 0.6833
3) 0.650 + 0.1219 + .03 = 0.8019
4) 0.0522 + 7.106 + 9.14 = 16.2982
5) 0.0231 + 5.23 + 23.108 = 28.3611
Arrange the following in column then
subtract.

1. 45.0246 - 0. 2323 = 44.7923

2. 3. 2935 - 1. 3799 = 1.9136
3. 3.5675 - 0.53 = 3.0375
4. 27.599 - 5.33 = 22.269
5. 95.678 - 89.5021 = 6.1759
In adding/subtracting decimal numbers follow
these steps:

• Align the decimal points.

• Add / subtract like adding/ subtracting whole

numbers. Regroup if necessary.

• Place the decimal point exactly below the

decimal points of the addends
