DOING REMOTE

SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS
Presenter: Excelsa Filio-Buan
Session Goals:

The purpose of this session is:

To review relevant practices in Science remote teaching
To recognize the impact of distance learning to teaching
and learning Science concepts
To revisit ideas on doing remote Science experiments

Relevant practices in remote Science learning:
• Discussion is important and needs to
be skillfully facilitated during
synchronous classes.
• Keep what is shared online simplified.
• Help students build their own learning

Relevant practices in Science learning:
• Science is a hands-on subject so new
teaching practices have been
developed.
• Science teachers have gone to basics.
Simple equipment are being used to
facilitate learning during lockdowns,
quarantines…

Impact of distance learning in
teaching and learning Science concepts:

• Learners are enjoined to explore their

homes, gardens and backyards.
• Project-based tasks are encouraged such as
helping parents create organic fertilizer and
creating organic vegetable gardens with
their families.
• Learners maybe encouraged to engage
their parents in understanding science
concepts.

Impact of distance learning in
teaching and learning Science concepts:

• In preparing to teach Science

remotely, Science teachers need to
reflect and understand that they can
not bring the traditional classroom
and simply replicate that online.
• Science teachers need to continue
pushing exploration and engaging
students in discussion.

Doing remote Science experiments
• Make use of the learners’ home environment:
– i.e. Let them watch how leaves blow or how
balls roll down a pathway
• Engage young learners to use simple
materials that they find around the house
– i.e. If the experiment is on friction, different
balls can be used and there will be different
outcomes

Doing remote Science experiments
• On phenomena-based learning, students
maybe asked to observe, collect
information, and investigate on their own
during asynchronous time and then share it
during synchronous classroom.
• Teachers must continue to guide learners
why things happen and encourage group
discussions.

Doing remote Science experiments
• Have students use what is available at
home
• Prepare take home kits
• Create live or recorded experiments
• Provide online simulations

Doing remote Science experiments
• AIR COMPRESSION – CLOUD IN A BOTTLE
• AIR PRESSURE – IMPLOADING CAN
• AIR PRESSURE – MAKING A HOVER CRAFT
• MEMBRANES – BOUNCY EGG
• ACIDS AND BASES – INVISIBLE INK
• STATIC ELECTRICITRY – BENDING WATER
• AIR POWER – BALLOON RACER
• ELEMENT 31 – EXPLORING GALLIUM
• CHEMICAL REACTIONS – EXPLODING BAG
•10/13/2023

SCIENCE IS NOT THE TRUTH, SCIENCE IS
SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH.
WHEN SCIENCE CHANGES ITS OPINION, IT
DIDN’T LIE TO YOU. IT LEARNED MORE.
