Definition

Literature

Literature is an imaginative work that pictures human


life in a society that can be enjoyed, understood, and
used by society. Literature is a means of social
expression, a mirror of life, and an interpretation of
human expressions that help us understand how to
live.
Two Major Categories

Fiction Non-fiction

Fiction is any creative work, chiefly any narrative work, Any publication or piece of media that strives, in good faith,
portraying individuals, events, or places that are imaginary, to present information only about the real world, as opposed
or in ways that are imaginary. to being based on imagination, is considered non-fiction.
Elements Of Literature

Plot

Plot is the cause-and-effect sequence of main events in a story. The


plot is the story and more specifically, how it develops, unfolds,
and moves in time.

Character
A character is a person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story.
A literary character is a person, animal, or object/thing presented
as a person in a narrative.

Setting

The setting is the time and place of the story. it is a literary element of literature
used in novels, short stories,plays, films, etc.,

Point Of View
Point of view is the writer's way of deciding who is telling the story to whom.
Establishing a clear point of view is important because it dictates how your
reader interprets characters, events, and other important details. There are three
kinds of point of view: first person, second person, and third person.

Theme

Theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work


which is conveyed by an author and interpreted by a reader.
