LOGICS
• Logic is the study of TRUTH and how we can
obtain universal truths through mathematical
deduction. It is the most basic language of
mathematics, and the underlying principle of
proof.
• Logic is traditionally defined as the study of the
laws of thought or correct reasoning and is usually
understood in terms of inferences or arguments.
• The study of the principles and criteria of valid
inference and demonstration.
• The study of how conclusions follow from
premises due to the structure of arguments alone,
independent of their topic and content.

A statement is any
DECLARATIVE Sometimes referred
sentence that could as logical argument,
be either TRUE or proposition and
FALSE but NOT logical statement.
BOTH.
Examples:
Statement:
 “Drilling for oil caused dinosaurs to become extinct.”
 “× + 2 = 2x when × = -2”
 “The Earth is further from the Sun than Venus.”

Not a Statement:
 “Look out!”
 “× + 2 = 2x
 “How long will it take to the next equation?”

Statements
Simple Statement
A statement that conveys only ONE idea.
USUALLY defined as a statement that declares or proposes
that an idea is TRUE.

Example:
 “All rectangles are parallelogram.”
 “Triangles have four sides.”
 “My dog has four puppies.”
Compound Statements
A statement that conveys two or more idea that are conjoined by
logical connectives.
A Compound statement is a group of two or more statements
connected using logical connectives and each statement can be TRUE
or FALSE but not both.

Logical Connectives
Is a symbol which is used to connect two or more statements such as
and, or, if… then, and if and only if.
Examples of Compound Statements
• “I will play Mobile Legends and watch some horror
movies.”

• “I would rather watch a movie or eat lunch with you.”

• “If this book is interesting, then I am staying at home.”

• “This book is interesting if and only if I am staying at


home.”
Summary
 A Statement is any declarative sentence
that could be either true or false.

 Simple Statement is a statement that


conveys only one idea

 Compound Statement is a statement that


conveys two or more statements conjoined
by logical connectives. Each statement
can be true or false but not both.

Logical Connectives are and, or, if… then,


and if and only if.
