BACKGROUND
The Annual Student- Led School Hazard Mapping Training introduces a unique and empowering approach to disaster preparedness by placing students at the forefront of identifying and understanding potential
hazards within their school environment.

HAND Approach
Hazard Mapping
is a tool used to evaluate school facilities, in
search of potential hazards that can hurt or
injure teachers, students, and personnel.
Hazard Mapping
Stipulated under DepEd Order No. 23, s.
2015 entitled Student-led School Watching
and Hazard Mapping, all public schools are
required to conduct this activity within the
first month of the school opening of the
current School Year.
Hazard Mapping
Students and personnel are required to:
Provide input in the assessment of the
safety of physical facilities in reference to
the training conducted.

training, assessment, consolidation, and
recommendation for proper endorsement.

Where to Begin?
Hazard Mapping
After establishing a perimeter, perform a
walk-through of the area, to look for
hazards as indicated in the training.
Tip: Involve the current and potential users of the area in

this process to gain valuable input!
Step 1:
Identify the Hazards
If you are unsure whether something
should be included in your hazard mapping
assessment checklist, write them
under OTHERS for evaluation.
Falling Objects
• Are there objects which may fall from
above?
• Are there people working overhead?
• Tools or materials handled above your
head?
Harmful Dusts/Mists/Fumes
Are there anyone exposed to chemicals or
harmful dusts/mists/fumes?
Examples: are any chemical that poses a
health hazard such as asbestos, welding
fumes, solder fumes, and Silica
Energy Sources
Are there energy sources that could be
harmful if accidental release or startup
occurs?
Electrical Pneumatic Hydraulic
Thermal Mechanical Gravity
Sharp Objects
Are there sharp objects which could cut or
pierce the body?
Examples:
Glass, Knife blades, Sheet Metal, Nails,
Burrs (scrap metal), and Needles Splinters
(wood)
EXTREME TEMPERATURES
Are there hot or cold surfaces that could
burn or freeze anyone?
Examples:
Welded parts, Cryogenic Materials,
Autoclaves, Ovens/Stoves,
Molten Metals
LIGHT RADIATION
Is there light radiation that could be
harmful to the skin or eyes?
Examples: Welding and Cutting
Lasers
FLYING DEBRIS
Will anyone be operating, or exposed to,
tools/equipment which may generate flying
debris?
Examples: Hammering, Sawing,
Chipping, Grinding, Drilling, and Buffing
EXCESSIVE NOISE
Will anyone be operating, or exposed to,
tools/equipment excessive noise?
Examples: Jack-Hammering, Woodworking
Machinery, Metalworking Machinery, and
Operating Heavy Equipment
WORKPLACE LAYOUT
Does the layout of the workplace create a
potential hazard?
Examples: Fall hazards exceeding four feet,
Low clearances, and Confined spaces.
FIRE/EXPLOSION HAZARDS
Is there potential for a fire or
explosion?
STEP 2
Once the hazard has been identified, create
a list and recommendation for effective
control to eliminate or reduce the hazard to
an acceptable manner.
STEP 3
Evaluate the level of risk for each hazard to
determine the type of control that should
be implemented to reduce exposure
STEP 4
First is always consider eliminating the
hazard by selecting the appropriate solution
(if possible) If not consider reducing it to an
acceptable level.
STEP 5
If an acceptable level cannot be reached,
select and provide appropriate personal
protective equipment for the students and
personnel.

campus
 Presence of electrical post/transformer near or
within the school perimeter
 No system of release to personnel during
emergencies
 No posted emergency hotlines around the
premises
 Garbage area (segregation of biodegradable, non-
biodegradable, and hazardous waste)
 Detached or peeled off GI sheet

 Broken toilet bowl and/or sinks
 Broken chairs/desks/tables
 Blocked/no emergency exits
 Unmounted cabinets/shelves
 Medical kits in every office
 Alcohol dispenser in every office
 Bells/alarms
 Condemnable building (i.e. very old structure, collapsing
building and/or prominent cracks on office walls)
 Others (List as many as possible)
