At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:


● identify the purpose in a sample speaking engagement;
● determine the verbal and nonverbal cues that a speaker uses in order to
achieve a purpose;
● utilize knowledge on the functions of communication in analyzing
various communication situations; and
● recognize the importance of different communicative functions in our
daily lives.

INTRODUCTION
In the succeeding activities, you will have a chance to explore different
situations to learn the various functions of communication and their relevance
to your daily interactions with people. By observing how people
communicate, you will find out what type of approach works best in a
communicative scenario.
Theoreticians such as Roman
Jakobson, Michael Halliday, and
Bronislaw Malinowski have
categorized the different functions of
communication.

Communication functions to regulate and control the


behavior of a person or group of people.
Example:
Doctor’s prescriptions, parents’ instruction to their
children, friends giving advice on what course or action
to take, scolding, employer’s orders to their employees,
customers making orders, a policeman scolding not to
jaywalk
CONTROL AND
REGULATION

Communication functions to regulate and control the

Example:

Communication functions to inspire or motivate a


person or people to be or do better.
Examples:
the school principal talks in front of the students to do
their best in the games, expressing a need, communica-
ting desires and aspirations,
INFORMATION
DISSEMINATION

Communication functions as a way to share information


or data in order to educate.
Examples:
A Filipino scientist provides information to a low-income
community on how to light up their homes by using a
bottle filled with water and a teaspoon of bleach
EMOTIONAL
EXPRESSION

Communication functions as a way to connect to a person


or people for the purpose of affecting them
emotionally.
Examples:
A speaker may appeal to the listeners by disclosing how
he or she was also moved by that particular movie, drama
series, or song.
