Flying
Winter Flying
• Is it good or bad to fly in winter?
• The winter months can bring beautifully smooth, dense air that truly
makes flying enjoyable.
• Great engine performance
• Great climb rates
• But…
Winter Flying
• Requires a little extra planning
• For preparation
• Flight planning
• Destination considerations
Before Flight
• Pre-heating required if the temperature has been below 0 degrees within
the previous two hours of flight and plane was not recently flown
Before Flight
• Dress appropriately
• Consider time outside while preheating or clearing the plane
• Consider your protection in the unlikely event of an airport landing
• Do not run battery down
• Crank starter for 5 seconds with 30 a second wait between cranks
• Aircraft are 24 volts, do not try to jump start from a car and secure appropriate
maintenance to jump start the engine
• Read the POH before jump starting
• If unable to start the plane, inform the mechanics.
• Be cautious about ice on taxiways and high
snowbanks
• Avoid use of brakes on a slippery runway
• If taxing on the grass, ensure it is solid enough to
taxi on
• Be cautious of runups while on ice, the plane my
slide during runup
• Notam’s for destination and
alternate airports
• E.g. snow-covered taxiways
and runways
• Runway slipperiness express
for each third of the runway
(e.g. 5/5/5 is good, 1/1/1 is
really bad)
General Guidance
• Make sure oil temperatures are in the green before flight and before high
RPM’s
• Be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning
• Keep fuel tanks full to minimize water condensation in the tanks
What is carburettor and would cause the
carburettor to stop functioning?

• Carburettor is a device responsible for the maintenance of the proper air to

fuel ratio for combustion
• If the carburettor stops working, we have a problem which affects the
proper running of the engine, and could ultimately end in an engine failure
