The Application of Maths in the

Sports Field

Welcome to the world of sports and mathematics! In this

presentation, we will explore the significant role
that math plays in the sports industry .
Mathematics knows no races or
geographic boundaries; for
mathematics, the cultural world is one
country. ..
The Impact of Maths in Sports
Mathematics plays a significant role in the world of sports, influencing various
aspects of athletic performance, strategy, and analysis. Let's explore some key areas
where maths has a profound impact:

• Player performance analysis. • Tactical decision-making.

• Training optimization • Game strategy:

• Sports technology • Performance prediction:

The impact of maths in sports is far-reaching, helping athletes, coaches, and teams
gain a competitive edge and achieve optimal performance.
Mathematics in Cricket: Calculating
Batting Average, Run Rate, and
Distance Traveled :
Run Rate: Run rate is a measure of how many runs team
is scoring per over. It is calculated by dividing the total
runs scored by the total number of overs played. The
formula is: run rate = total runs / total overs.

Batting Average: Batting average is

calculated by dividing the total number of runs scored by
the number of times a batsman has been dismissed. The
formula is: batting average = total runs / number of
dismissals.

Distance Traveled: The distance the ball travels after

being hit by a batsman can be calculated using various
mathematical models. Factors such as the launch angle,
initial velocity, and air resistance are taken into account to
estimate the distance traveled.
Conic Sections in Kho-Kho:
Utilizing Mathematical
Precision
• Kho-Kho, a popular Indian sport, involves
strategic movements and quick decision-
making.

• Conic sections, such as circles and ellipses, play

a crucial role in the game. The circular field and
the path of the players are determined by
these mathematical curves, ensuring fair play
and precise positioning

• Understanding conic sections is essential for

players to excel in Kho-Kho.
Application of Statistics
Calculations in Football :
 Player Goals: Calculate the goal-scoring efficiency of
a player by dividing the number of goals they have
scored by the number of shots they have taken. For
example, if a player has scored 10 goals from 50
shots, their goal-scoring efficiency would be 20%.

 Shots on Target: Calculate the accuracy of shots on

target for a team by dividing the number of shots on
target by the total number of shots taken. For
instance, if a team has 10 shots on target out of 20
shots attempted, their shot accuracy would be 50%.

 Passing Accuracy: Calculate the passing accuracy of a

player by dividing the number of successful passes
they have made by the total number of passes
attempted. For instance, if a player has completed 80
passes out of 100 attempted, their passing accuracy
would be 80%.

Application of maths in Golf:
 The Rules on Golf balls involve limitations on size, weight,
efficiency (quantified by a test dubbed the initial velocity) and the
Overall Distance Standard, together with a restriction on symmetry
and the requirement that the ball is in some sense traditional and
customary

Prediction of ball speed and the Equipment Rules

The basic physics of normal impact can be captured using the

definition of the coefficient of restitution (e) and the conservation of
momentum

e(uc − ub) = vb − vc

 A golf ball in flight is an example of a projectile because it follows a
curved path called a parabola. An example of a parabola is shown
below. The shape of the curve is affected by two main forces,
gravity and air resistance.

Application of maths in Archery:
 Arrow weight is one of the most important calculations in
archery. An arrow's weight determines the physics behind
how it flies. Weight influences the arrow's speed,
trajectory and penetration into a target. It's important to
shoot the right weight for each bow setup

 Front of centre is another important arrow calculation.

The FOC formula indicates how the weight is distributed
throughout the arrow. The FOC number describes the
percentage of an arrow’s total weight in its front half. It’s
good to know for accurate shooting, especially at long
range

 An arrow’s momentum is important to know. The more

momentum an arrow has, the greater the force is
required to stop it. That translates into the arrow’s
penetration into the target. Momentum is equal to mass
times velocity

To calculate momentum:
Mass of arrow (grains) x arrow speed (fps) / 225,400
(gravitational constant) = momentum
Application of maths in Gymnastics :
 A lot of different kinds of math used in gymnastics
such as angles, decimals, and average. ANGLES:
Whenever you do a skill you are at a different angle
each time. When the gymnast in a handstand they are
at an 180 degree angle which is obtuse.

 Average is also used in calculating the gymnast's

score. There is more than one judge scoring the
gymnasts and they all give different scores. To get the
final score they take the average of all of the scores
they gave the gymnasts. For example, if the first judge
gave the gymnast a 9.1 and the second judge gave then
an 8.3 the overall score would be an 8.7.

 Scoring in gymnastics also uses math. The way the

judges score a gymnast is with decimals. The highest
score you can get is 10.00 and the lowest in 1.00, the
score is always a decimal no matter what it is. The
number in the hundredths place after the decimal has
to be either a zero or a five.
Application of maths in Baseball:
 Bat speed and exit velocity: Mathematics is used to measure and
analyze the speed at which a batter swings the bat and the speed of
the ball coming off the bat (exit velocity). Calculations involving
kinetic energy, momentum, and collision dynamics are used to
determine the power and effectiveness of a hit.

 Trajectory and spin rate: Mathematical concepts such as

trigonometry and physics are used to analyze the trajectory and
spin rate of a baseball in flight. Understanding the angles, speed,
and rotation of the ball can help pitchers optimize their pitches for
maximum effectiveness.

 Pitch velocity: Mathematics is used to measure and analyze the

speed of a baseball pitch, which is a critical factor in determining a
pitcher's effectiveness. Calculations involving distance, time, and
acceleration are used to calculate the velocity of a pitch, with radar
guns providing real-time data.

 Launch angle and distance: Mathematical concepts such as

trigonometry and physics are used to analyze the launch angle and
distance of a baseball hit. Optimizing the launch angle and exit
velocity can result in longer distances and higher chances of hitting
a home run
