Animal protein is bad and causes cancer ... based largely on a rodent study showing
that a 20% casein diet (but not a 5% casein diet) caused rats to get liver cancer
when administered aflatoxin.

What the movie doesn’t tell you? Half the animals on the 5% protein diet died by the
end of the first year due to liver toxicity. AND, giving aflatoxin probably isn’t the most
representative model for how humans get cancer.

Quotables: “Muscle incinerates fat.” “Muscle torches fat.”

Misleading! Muscle is important, but ...
kidneys: 440 kcal/kg/d
brain: 240 kcal/kg/d
liver: 200 kcal/kg/d
skeletal muscle: 14.5 kcal/kg/d
see Javed et al. Am J Clin Nutr 91(4): 907, 2010

Got that? ~15 kcal per kg, or 7 kcal per pound (not 30-50!)

Also, think ... we’re about 40% muscle, so if 1 lb of muscle burned 50 kcal,
175 lb person x 0.40 = 70 lb of muscle x 50 kcal = 3500 kcal per day !

In reality, you’d need to gain >30 lbs of muscle to increase RMR by 250 kcal/d.

Evolutionary Medicine. Also called Darwinian Medicine.

From Wikipedia: “the application of modern evolutionary theory to understanding health and
disease.” i.e. our bodies have been shaped by evolutionary process ... Can we use that
knowledge?

Examples:

Is our modern diet unhealthy? Should we try to mimic early diets? e.g. Paleolithic diet

We all have a “fight or flight” response for survival. But what if it’s always “on”, and there’s
no “fight or flight” follow-through? “Stress kills.” Example: your own prof and his blood sugar!

Collective Medicine

One Health Mission Statement: “Recognizing that human and animal health and mental health (via the
human-animal bond phenomenon) are inextricably linked, One Health seeks to promote, improve, and
defend the health and well-being of all species by enhancing cooperation and collaboration between
physicians, veterinarians, and other scientific health professionals…”

One Health endorsed by Amer Med Assoc., Amer Vet Assoc, Amer Physiol Society, and our own OVC.
EcoHealth is kind of the Canadian version, with an emphasis on ecology.
