1
WHAT IS GAS
FLARING?
Flaring is the process of wasting valuable natural resources that should either
be used for productive purposes such as generating power. Therefore, it is
defined as the burning of natural gas associated with oil extraction.
The practice has persisted since the beginning of oil production over 160
years ago
The amount of gas currently flared each year is about 140 billion cubic meters
which could power the whole of sub-Saharan Africa

WHY DO WE FLARE
GAS?
In industrial plants
In oil and gas extraction sites
4
DISADVANTAGES OF GAS FLARING
Toxic nature
Polluting water and earth
Relatively expensive storge
Costly pipeline
5
FLARED GAS RECOVERY SOLUTION
Gas injection
Thermal injection
Chemical injection
6
CHALLENGES AND LIMITATION OF
FLARED GAS RECOVERY
The technical difficulties involved in capturing and processing flared gas
The fact that some oil companies may not see gas recovery as a profitable
venturer

CONCLUSION
There are different ways the produced gas can be used instead of discarding it
by flaring. Utilizing the gas in a safer way can solve the problems of energy
generation, greenhouse effects and also create a safer environment. The
produced gas can serve different purposes instead of being flared.
