CAMBODIAN MUSIC
Cambodia is one of the most beautiful countries in Southeast Asia. it is located at the
center of the former Khmer kingdom of Angkor, great empire that dominated southeast
Asia for 6oo years. it's music flourished in both village and court settings, some
associated with specific functions and entertainment.
There are different kinds of music used for different activities in Cambodia:
• Kar - celebrations of weddings.
• Arakk - rituals on spirit communications.
• Ayai Repartee – singing for some entertainment
• Yike and Baasak/Lakhon Basaac – for theater performance
Varied activities are also done inside the court. There are dances, masked plays,
shadow plays, and religious ceremonies accompanied by different ensembles of
musicians.
MYANMAR MUSIC
Myanmar was known as Burma until 1989. Its music is
melodious, generally without harmony, and is usually in common
time signature of 4/4 (na-yi-see), 2/4 (wa-let-see), 8/16 (wa-let-a-
myan).
Burmese classical music ensembles are divided into outdoor and
indoor ensembles:
• Sidaw/Sidawgyi, is an outdoor ensemble in royal courts. It is
usually performed in a royal ploughing ceremony, an ancient
royal rite held in many Asian countries to mark the
traditional start of the rice-growing season. Sidaw is also
played in festivals.
• Saung, is an indoor form composed of a female a singer
accompanied by a traditional ensemble.
