THERAVADA
Is the more conservative subdivision of
Buddhism than Mahayana thus, it is
closer to the fundamental teachings of
Siddhartha.

Who is SIDDHARTHA?
•The Buddha: Siddhartha Gautama was a man who
became Buddha, the Awakened One - much in the same
way as Jesus became Christ.

•The Buddha was a man named Siddhartha Gautama.


Since his death, his teachings are a source of authority
for Theravada Buddhists. The Buddha does not have
the status of a god as he is dead. According to
Theravada Buddhism, the most ideal path to
enlightenment would be living in monastic tradition .

BACKGROUND OF THERAVADA BUDDHISM

•The oldest lasting school initiated by adherents


taught directly by Buddha himself.

•One of the three major factions of Buddhism is


Known as the "Doctrine of the Elders".

•Theravada Buddhism is conceived to be the most


ascetic monastic training.

•The first basket was known as the Vinaya Pitaka,
translated "Basket of Discipline"
• the Buddha's rules of discipline for the monks and nuns
•The second basket is known as the Sutta Pitaka,
translated "Basket of Discourse"
•the teaching of Buddha that include the necessities to
reach Nirvana
•the doctrine and practices of the Buddha
•the first songs of Buddhist nuns, which is the first documents
writings of women's sacred poetry
•The final basket is the Abhiddhamma Pitaka, translated
"Basket of Metaphysics"
•ast basket contains commentaries on the teachings of the

THE SYMBOL OF THERAVADA BUDDHISM

Thus, Theravada Buddhism retained most of the


classic Indian Buddhist symbols such as the
Dharma wheel, though in many cases, these
symbols became more elaborately decorated with
gold, jewels and other designs.

RITUALS AND BELIEFS

•Because the most desirable way of life is to be a


monk, all boys enter the monastery - a right of
passage.
•Theravada Buddhism is highly ritualistic.
•Purpose of ritual is to help in the journey to
becoming enlightened.
•Another purpose is to bring good things upon
oneself and upon others.
•Central practice: meditation

Other rituals would be the use of Mudras (symbolic


gestures). These gestures are used symbolically in
images of Buddha. They are used in practice to induce
specific ideas in the mind during time of Buddhist
meditation or sometimes in ritual.

BHUMISPARSHA MUDRA

The most common mudra for images in Myanmar and in
other Theravada Buddhist countries, it symbolises
Guatama Buddha calling the earth as witness to his
enlightenment by touching the ground with his right hand.

DHARMACAKRA MUDRA

This mudra symbolises "the turning of the wheel of


Dhamma" and represents the Buddha's first sermon.

RECLINING BUDDHA

This mudra represents the Gautama Buddha immediately
before his death at the age of 80, in a pose known as
parinirvana. Since he assured his followers that death was
the final step in his Nirvana, the scene invokes tranquility
and acceptance, not sadness

As a summary, Theravada Buddhism
emphasises attaining self-liberation
through one's own efforts. Meditation and
concentration are vital elements of the way
to enlightenment. The ideal road is to
dedicate oneself to full-time monastic life.

1. The First Noble truth -DUKHHA

3.Third Noble truth- This asserts that there is a
cessation or nirodha to suffering and bondage
by eliminating craving and desire.
