Installation Art
It is a relatively new genre
of contemporary art - practiced by an
increasing number of postmodernist
artists - which involves the configuration
or "installation" of objects in a space,
such as a room or warehouse. The
resulting arrangement of material and
space comprises the "artwork".

Body
Art
The term "Body art" describes a type
of contemporary art, in which the artist's own
body becomes the "canvas" or "artwork".

Body art embraces a wide range of

disciplines, including: Body-Painting, Tattoo
art, Face-Painting, Body Play or
Shaping, Piercings, Aesthetic Dentistry,
Living Statues and
Branding/Scarification
Tattoo Art
A Tattoo is a permanent mark or design on the body
made by introducing indelible ink into the dermis layer
of the skin. Tattooing has been a popular form of
bodily decoration since the era of Neolithic art.

Aesthetic Dentistry
Aesthetic Dentistry can include gold/silver/porcelain
caps, having a hole drilled into a tooth and
implanting a jewel into the hole, and filing teeth to a
point to create the illusion of a fang.
Face-Painting (including Make-up)
Face painting also dates from the era
of Paleolithic art and culture, and was first
employed as a means of identifying key
individuals such as shamans and tribal chiefs.
Modern face painting - commonly referred to as
"cosmetic makeup"

Body Painting
First practised during the Stone Age, body
painting has become a distinctive feature of late 20th
century postmodernist art.
Mime and Living Statues
In contrast, the term "Living statue" is commonly
used to describe a street artist who stands
completely still - just like a statue or mannequin
- typically for hours at a time. The World
Championship of Living Statues is held every
year at Arnhem in the Netherlands.

Piercing
Piercings procedure in which a sharp instrument
is passed through a fold of skin or part of the
body.
Body Play or Shaping
The most severe form of body art. It includes body
suspension, waist/corset training, implanting foreign
objects under the skin, inserting metal spikes into
the skull or inserting marbles under the skin.

Branding/Scarification
Branding/Scarification procedure in which skin is
seared with a hot iron or cut with a scalpel or other
sharp object to produce a raised design; the
darker the skin, the better the keloid.
Earth or Land
ArtLand art or earth art is art that is made
directly in the landscape, sculpting the
land itself into earthworks or making
structures in the landscape using natural
materials such as rocks or twigs.
Performance
ArtThis new form of contemporary art - which
emerged out of happenings and conceptual
art to become a major form of avant-garde
art during the late 1960s and 1970s - takes as
its medium the artist himself: the actual
artwork being the artist's live actions.
