AN INTRO... A film crew is a group of people, hired by a production company, for the purpose of producing a film or motion picture. The crew is distinguished from the cast, as the cast are understood to be the actors who appear in front of the camera or provide voices for characters in the film. DIRECTION- PRODUCTION A director is the person who directs the making of a film. The director most often has the highest authority on a film set.
Production is generally not considered a
department as such, but as a series of functional groups. These include the film's producers and executive producers and production office staff such as the production manager, the production coordinator, and their assistants, etc. LOCATION Location manager oversees the locations department and its staff, typically reporting directly to the production manager or assistant director.
Location manager is responsible for final clearing a
location for filming and must often assist production and finance departments in maintaining budget management. CAMERA The director of photography is in charge of the look of the "frame" of the movie shots, hence the name "photography". They are the chief of the camera and lighting crew of the film. The term cinematographer is usually synonymous with director of photography, though some professionals insist this only applies when the director of photography and camera operator are the same person. LIGHTING The gaffer is the head of the lighting department, responsible for the design of the lighting plan for a production. Sometimes the gaffer is credited as chief lighting technician.
The best boy electric is the chief assistant to the
gaffer. They are not usually on set, but dealing with upkeep of the lighting truck, rentals, manpower, and other logistics. LIGHTING TECHNIQUES • Natural Lighting: Natural film lighting is one of the best and most used lighting techniques in the filming industry today.
• Back Lighting: This basic lighting is meant to hit
the actor or object of focus from behind.
• Practical Lighting : This lighting style is meant
more for video makers who intend to use light sources within a specific location ART DEPARTMENT Art director: The art director reports to the production designer, and more directly oversees artists and craftspeople. Standby art director: The standby art director monitors the art department's work on set during filming. They work closely with the standby painters and standby carpenters. SETS AND PROPERTY Set dresser: The set dressers apply and remove the "dressing"; i.e., furniture, carpets, wall signs, everything one would find in a location. Greensmen: The greensman or greensperson is a specialized set dresser dealing with the artistic arrangement or landscape design of plant material, sometimes real and sometimes artificial. Weapons master: The weapons master, or armorer, is a specialized prop technician who deals with firearms. COSTUME DEPARTMENT Costume supervisor: The costume supervisor works closely with the designer. In addition to helping with the design of the costumes, they manage the wardrobe workspace. Cutter: A costume technician who fits or tailors costumes, usually on set. They might also be called fitter, seamstress, or tailor. Some celebrity actors have favorite cutters. MAKE-UP ARTISTS Hair and make-up: Some actors or actresses have personal makeup artists or hair stylists.
Key make-up artist: The key makeup artist is the
department head who answers directly to the director and production designer. They are responsible for planning makeup designs for all leading and supporting cast. SOUND PRODUCTION Production sound mixer : The production sound mixer is the head of the sound department on location and is responsible for the operation of the audio mixer and recorder
Boom operator: The boom operator, first assistant
sound or "1st AS", is responsible for using microphones on the end of boom poles TECHNIQUES IN SOUND PRODUCTION Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs): The use of (DAWs) has also revolutionized music production. DAWs are software programs that allow musicians to record, edit, and mix music on a computer. Sampling: It is the process of taking a portion of a sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or sound effect. SFX CREW The special effects department oversees the mechanical effects that create optical illusions during live-action shooting. It is not to be confused with the visual effects department, which adds photographic effects to the film after production. SPECIAL EFFECTS A bullet hit squib: It is a practical, special effect device. This is achieved by blowing open a pre- scored hole on the actor's clothing and bursting a fake blood packet with a small explosion. Digital film compositing: It is the process of digitally assembling multiple images to make a final image, typically for print, motion pictures or screen display. POST PRODUCTION The film editor is the creative head of the post production department and is responsible for assembling the picture into an edited story, with the help of the director. Post production supervisors are responsible for the post production process, during which they maintain clarity of information and good channels of communication VFX CREW The onset VFX crew works to action prepare shots and plates for future visual effects. They are altered after production process. Techniques mentioned earlier are done by the VFX crew. Some of the important crew members: • Visual effects producer • Visual effects creative director VISUAL EFFECTS Motion capture: It is the process of recording the movement of objects or people. It is used in military, entertainment, sports, medical applications, and for validation of computer vision and robotics. Matte painting : A matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that is not present at the filming location.
