Introduction
• FOLDING is an event that brings about conversion of trilaminar
embryonic disc to cylindrical embryo and somewhat definitive human
shape
• Folding result from geometrical growth of the embryo in some region
compare to some region. The growth rate is not uniform in every part
of the embryo, more the cranio-caudal axis
• The folding occur concurrent in the cranio-caudal axis(median plane)
and horizontal axis(plane) bringing head & tail folding and lateral
folding
FOLDING IN MEDIAN
PLAIN/Longitudinal folding
• Folding in this plain produces
Head and tail folding
In head folding, the cranial region move ventrally
While in tail folding the caudal region move also ventrally
Head Folding
• This and other folding starts at the beginning of the fourth week

• The developing brain grow rapidly beyond oropharyngeal membrane

thereby overhangs the primordial heart.
Effect of Head Folding
• The following structures move anteriorly
Septum transversum and caudal to the heart
Primordial heart
Pericardiac coelom(now ventral to the heart)
Oropharyngeal membrane
• New structure formed
Foregut from yolk sac endoderm
Tail Folding and effect

• Result from growth of distal part of the neural tube

• EFFECTS
Formation of hindgut and subsequently cloaca
Primitive streak lie caudal to cloacal membrane
Allantois and connecting stalk is ventral
Folding in Horizontal plane/Lateral folding
• This result from rapid growth of spinal cord and formation of somites

• This folding create a cylindrical embryo by rolling of the embryonic

lateral extremes ventrally

• Final fusion of the lateral edges reduces the link between

intraembryonic and extraembryonic coelom
Effects of lateral folding
• Formation of midgut

• Formation of the connecting stalk
