Introduction
 Today, we'll present our hydraulic cylinder replacement
project to the senior manager for an overview of our
successful project execution.
 Our presentation revolves around the significant task of
replacing a hydraulic cylinder, its challenges,
accomplishments, and the valuable insights we've gained.

2
Project Overview
 Brief Background: The project
involved addressing an issue
with a hydraulic elevator in
Conestoga Apartments, 399
Laurel Street, Cambridge,
Ontario, N3H 3Y8.
 Problem Statement: The elevator
exhibited oil loss without
apparent leaks, affecting its
functionality.
 Purpose: Our objective was to
replace the hydraulic cylinder to
restore elevator performance and A Hydraulic Elevator

ensure tenant satisfaction. -lifts/
3
Approach Adopted
 We adopted a comprehensive approach to tackle the issue,
involving thorough assessment, planning, and execution.
 Coordination with Stakeholders: Collaborated closely with
TSSA, building management and tenants to minimize
disruptions during the process. Worked with fire service for
safety during welding process.
 Unforeseen Challenges: Encountered unexpected issues
during removal, requiring specialized drilling for extraction.
 Adaptation: Modified our strategy promptly to address
challenges while ensuring safety and efficiency.
 Adhered to safety protocols and sought advice from TSSA
for regulations in accordance with the required Safety
Codes.

Problem Summary
 Issue in hydraulic elevator installed in 1978 within a 4-story office
building.
 The building primarily consists of doctor offices on the top floor and
various businesses occupying the rest of the building.
 Site mechanic noticed a decrease in the oil level within the tank but
couldn’t find any visible signs of oil leakage or spills.
 Based on experience, there was suspicion that the loss of oil is
originating from the underground hydraulic cylinder.
 By inspecting the hydraulic cylinder, consulting with the team,
reviewing maintenance records, analyzing oil consumption and
conducting tests such as pressure test, full load and overload tests,
we determined that the hydraulic cylinder needs to be replaced.

Challenges Encountered
 We encountered a significant problem
with the new piston (plunger) that came
with the shipment in the second week of
our crew's onsite work.
 A very deep "score" was noticed on the
new piston. The score on the piston is
large enough that if it is installed will
result in an immediate leakage issue
once the elevator is put back into
service.
 We had two choices: Attempting Onsite
Repair or New replacement from the
supplier. Hydraulic Elevator Piston

piston to ensure the elevator's long-term
performance and customer satisfaction,
though it caused an additional three-
7
week delay.
Customer Relationship and Communication
 Establishing Clear Communication: "Maintained open lines of
communication with the customer to ensure their needs and
concerns were addressed.“
 Alternative arrangements: Advised the building management about
alternative ways of movement of people/ tenants in and out of the
building. Due to the presence of the hospital in the top floor, special
arrangements were also made to relocate them to the ground floor
for ease of access.
 Regular Updates: "Provided regular progress updates to the
customer, keeping them informed about the project's status."
 Addressing Concerns: "Responded promptly to any queries or
concerns, demonstrating our commitment to customer satisfaction."
 Building Trust: "Developed a strong rapport with the customer,
fostering a positive and trusting working relationship."

Budget and Unforeseen Challenges
 Project Cost Estimate: Total cost of [$81,350].
 Includes replacement cylinder, hydraulic oil, labour,
equipment, and other components.
 Exclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT).
Unforeseen Challenges
 Specialized Drilling Procedure: If required, the estimated
extra cost of $70,000 or more.
 Ensuring transparency and communication in case of
unforeseen challenges.

9
Financial Management and Future
Opportunities
 Effective Cost Management: Demonstrated a keen
focus on budget allocation and resource optimization,
resulting in cost-effective project execution.
 Profitable Outcomes: Successfully managed the
project's financial aspects, achieving a favorable
balance between costs and revenues.
 Identification of Opportunities: Identified potential
future opportunities for the client, such as
maintenance upgrades, showcasing a forward-
thinking approach.
 Long-Term Value: Established a foundation for
continued collaboration by showcasing how our
services can provide lasting value to the client.

cylinder replacement, restoring elevator
functionality.
 Cost Management: Managed project within budget,
optimizing resource allocation.
 Team Collaboration: Demonstrated strong
teamwork, leveraging diverse skills for a seamless
execution.
