OUR CITY UTENA
THE OLD POST STATION COMPLEX
Utena post station complex (Art School) was built in 1830-1835. It is a halfway of the tract St. Petersburg-
Warsaw, the oldest brick building remaining in Utena, the oldest architectural monument in the city. In the
old days, the complex had a lounge for the travelers waiting for carriages; it had rooms for cabmen, barracks,
stables, and a garage with different transport means- carriages, passenger stagecoaches and vans. In the
basement, there was a storage room and a temporary cell room. The basement has survived without major
changes; presently it houses an art gallery “Rūsys” where exhibitions are held. The old roadside complex has
been successfully adapted to meet scientific, art, culture and education needs.
Dauniškio park and fountain

The picturesque Dauniškis Park is a favorite place of Utena residents and guests alike. The
territory of the park is well lit and has benches and children's playgrounds. In summer
time, the lake attracts swimming and sunbathing lovers. In the evenings, concerts and
other events are organized by the lake Dauniškis. In 2011, Utena celebrated 750-year
anniversary of the city founding. On this occasion, Dauniškis Lake was decorated and
illuminated with a playing fountain with water screen. The fountain allures visitors for
daytime and evening events during the warm season.
Stone to commemorate the town foundation

time in historical sources in 1261 when Mindaugas, transferring some lands to
the Sword-bearers, included the name of Utena. At that time it was not a town but
wooden castle situated by the river “Utenėlė” on Narkūnai Castle-Hill.
