Earthquake in

Turkey and
Syria
What has happened?

In the early hours of Monday 6 February, a

powerful earthquake struck near the border of
Türkiye (official name for Turkey) with northern
Syria.

It killed thousands of people in Türkiye and

Syria, injured hundreds more and destroyed
thousands of homes and buildings.

Earthquake
What has happened?

The first earthquake was followed by another

major earthquake and many smaller
earthquakes, known as aftershocks, causing
even more damage.

Some of the aftershocks were almost as strong

as the first earthquake.

Earthquake
Where has this happened?

Millions of people across Türkiye, Syria,

Lebanon and Cyprus felt the ground
shaking.

Earthquake
People are in urgent need of help

Before the earthquake, CAFOD was already

providing humanitarian assistance
to families who have had to leave their
homes due to years of conflict in Syria.

So, when the earthquake happened, our local

experts were already in place, ready to assess
people’s needs.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the huge loss of life
caused by the earthquake...
Entrusting those who have died to the loving mercy of
the Almighty, I pray for the emergency personnel
involved in the ongoing relief efforts.”

Let us pray together:

We pray for the people of Syria and Türkiye.

We pray for everyone who is affected by the earthquakes,
those who have lost loved ones,
and all who have lost their homes.
May they be comforted by so many people
reaching out to offer support.
Lord, bless the efforts of rescuers and medical staff,
CAFOD and all the other agencies trying to help.
Move our hearts with compassion.
May our sisters and brothers know that they are loved
and find their hope restored.
Amen.
Thank
you
