FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY MINNA, NIGER STATE.

OCTOBER, 2023.
INTRODUCTION
 In this manner, I proposed a PDF to audio system converter application for

teaching and learning. Its function convert PDF to audio using a text to speech

system.
Background to the Study

 Portable Document Format (PDF): It's a versatile file format created by Adobe

that gives people an easy, reliable way to present and exchange documents -

regardless of the software, hardware, or operating systems being used by

anyone who views the document.

 In 1991, Adobe co-founder Dr. John Warnock propelled the paper-to-advanced
digital revolution with an idea he called, The Camelot Project (Warnock, J.
E.1991).
Statement of the Research Problem

With PDF being the most used document format globally, there is a need to convert

text in PDF formats into Audio signal. These can be utilized for various purposes,

e.g. in the educational system, car navigation, announcements in railway stations,

response services in telecommunications, and e-mail reading. Furthermore, people

with vision disabilities can’t view or read PDF files and this is a major setback. This

research addresses the problems in converting PDF text into speech. One is how to

improve the naturalness of synthetic speech in PDF-based text into an Audio

system.
Aim and Objectives of the Study
Aims and Objective of the Study
This research aims at the Design and Implementation of a PDF to
Audio System to aid accessibility and easy text to voice
assimilation of documents in PDF format.

The following are the objectives of the study:

Determine the difference between students who read using PDF
speaker mobile application and those that read without the
application.
Determine the gender differences between students who read
using PDF speaker mobile application.
Examine the age difference between students that read using
PDF speaker mobile application.
Research Questions
Research Questions

The following research questions were answered in this study;

 What is the mean scores of students that read using PDF speaker mobile

application and those that read without using the application?

 What is the mean scores of male and female students that read using PDF

speaker mobile application based on gender?

 What is the mean score of the age difference of students that read using PDF

speaker mobile application?

Research Hypotheses

Research Hypotheses

The following null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of
significance.
 HO1: There is no significant difference between the mean scores of students that

read using PDF speaker mobile application and those that read without the
application.
 HO2: There is no significant difference in the mean scores of students that read

using PDF speaker mobile application based on gender.

 HO3: There is no significant difference in the mean scores of the age difference of

students that read using PDF speaker mobile application.

Scope of the Study

Scope of the Study

 The scope of the research is focused on evaluating a Portable Document Format

to Audio system to improve the usage of PDF documents and in order to achieve

a more flexible audio speech system. The study will be carried out in North

Central Nigeria, Niger state, precisely in Federal University of Technology Minna

Bosso campus, 400L students of educational technology department

mathematics option.

 This study lasted for six weeks.

Significance of the Study

 The findings of this research work will be of benefit to teachers, students,

school and administrators.

 To Students: this system help students to with reading disabilities to study

using audio system.

 To Teachers: this study help teachers to manage class room situation.

 To Administrators: this study helps the administration to manage the staff and

student time.

Conceptual Framework

 Portable Document Format (PDF): It's a versatile file format created by Adobe

that gives people an easy, reliable way to present and exchange documents -

regardless of the software, hardware, or operating systems being used by anyone

who views the document.

 A Text-To-Speech (TTS) synthesizer is a computer-based system that should be

able to read any text aloud, whether it was directly introduced in the computer

by an operator or scanned and submitted to an Optical Character Recognition

(OCR) system.
Theoretical Framework

 Technology Acceptance Theory: this explores the factors influencing

users' acceptance and adoption of new technology (Davis 1986).

 Information System Theory: this focuses on understanding the role and

impact of information systems within organizations and society.

 Human-Computer Interaction: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a

multidisciplinary field that explores the interaction between humans and

digital technology.
Empirical Studies
Many research works had been conducted to design and implement an online attendance

system

 Karan (2013). conducted a study on students attendance management system.

 Saheed (2016). carried out a study on attendance management system using barcode

identification on students' identity cards.

 Hassan (2015). carried out a study to web based attendance management system
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design
 This study will adopt the quasi experimental research design. Montgomery, D. C. (2017)

Experimental design refers to the structured and systematic planning of experiments to

investigate a specific research question or hypothesis while controlling for potential sources of

bias and variability.

Population of the Study

 The population of this study will consist of undergraduate students of 400 level in the department

of Education Technology at Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State.

Sampling and Sampling Technique
 Fifty (50) students will be sampled for this study, from the department of Educational

Technology, Minna, Niger State. Purposive sampling technique will be employed to

select the respondents for the study.

Research Instrument
 The research instrument used for this research is the questionnaire instrument. Which

is divided into two parts the first part is the personal information of the students and

the second part is the academic performance of the students.

Validity of Instrument
 The package will be validated by a computer programmer and two lecturers in department of

Educational Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna, as well as the project

supervisor.

Reliability of Instrument
 The reliability of the instrument will be pilot tested on 10 randomly selected students of Federal

University of Technology, Bosso Campus, Minna, Niger State and the responses of the subjects

were recorded after the first and second administration of the test.
Method of Data Collection

 The researcher will seek permission from the Dean of School of Science and Technology

Education before administering the package and questionnaire to the respondents in

Federal University of Technology, Minna, Bosso, Campus. The researcher collected data

using the questionnaire

Method of Data Analysis

 The data of the Study collected was analyzed using the following statistical

techniques. The Mean and Standard Deviation was used to answer research

questions and the hypothesis raised in chapter one .
