Non verbal communication
It is the most basic form of communication including all
gestures ,posture, Facial expression, signs & symbols that
enable a person to communicate without words. Our
ancestors used to communicate with one another by using
their bodies for example the smiled and touched each other
to express affection &love . They used to show teeth to
express anger. Although we have come along way, we still
use non verbal communication to express our feelings.
likings, respect etc.

Studies show that
over half of your
message is carries
through non verbal
elements.

Kinesics
Kinesics is the name given to the study of physical
movement of our body . It is the way body
communicates without words Nodding your head ,
blinking your eyes , shrugging shoulders and other
such physical activities are all forms of non verbal
communication. The best way to examine the
personality & behavior of a person is not to listen
what he says but to observe what he does.
Kinesics
Posture

The posture involves the

movement of the whole body.
Posture and Body Orientation
⮚ You communicate numerous messages by the
way you walk, talk, stand and sit.
⮚ Standing erect, but not rigid, and leaning
slightly forward communicates to your audience
that you are approachable, receptive and
friendly.
⮚ Speaking with your back turned or looking at
the floor or ceiling should be avoided; it
communicates disinterest to your audience
Gestures

Movement of different
parts of our body.
Gestures
⮚ Head nods, a form of gestures, communicate positive
reinforcement to students and indicate that you are listening.
⮚ A lively and animated communication style captures
peoples' attention, makes the material more interesting,
facilitates understanding and provides a bit of entertainment.
⮚ If you fail to gesture while speaking, you may be perceived
as boring, stiff and unanimated.
Facial Expression
The face seems to be the most obvious
components of body language, but it
is certainly the most confusing and
difficult to understand. A popular
saying goes like this, "the face is the
index of the heart.” Whatever we
feel deep within ourselves is at once
reflected on the face.
Facial Expression

Facial expressions reflect emotion,

feelings and attitudes

the easiest & the earliest form human communication. In
our life touch plays an important role. It can communicate
many messages for example when we appreciate someone
we pat on his back. Younger people express respect by
touching the feet of elders and elders also grace their
younger but touching their heads . By shaking hand, we
show our warmth & attention.
Appearances & accessories
“First impression is the last impression”.
Proxemics
Proxemics is the study of physical space. The way
people use space tells about them. In a professional
setting, space is used to signal power and status.
You ,as a speaker, will have an open space before you
when addressing an audience . You should use the
psychological power of this space to your advantage.
Your gesture should be in accordance with the space
available.

Use of time
Chronemics
Chronemics is the study of how human beings
communicate through their used of time. How do you
communicate with others? What does time mean to you?
Time is precious. We should use it more effectively. In the
professional world time is a valuable commodity. People
have their own ‘time language’. Time language also
varies from culture to culture. As a speaker your
awareness of schedules is a chronemic element.
