The Morality

of
Human Sexuality

Introduction
✘ The significant and vital role that sex plays in an individual’s desire to be
fully human has, to some extent, remained undisclosed, dubious and
even sinful, primarily due to the culturally patterned negative attitude of
Filipinos towards human sexuality.
✘ Many still find an intellectually open and sane discussion of sex as a
forbidden thing or mortal sin.
✘ Sex is something unmentionable or not to be discussed in public and
seldom between the young and the elders.

2
Meaning of Sex to the Individual
✘ Humans are bodily present in their unasked-for situation in the
world. Through one’s physical body, he/she is accessible to other
people, for his/her presence to them is as much a bodily presence as
theirs is to him/her.
✘ One’s body, thus makes other people available and accessible to
him/her as she/he is to them.

3
✘ Through sexual meaning, one may realize that he/she is
alone and separate, powerless, ignorant, helpless, weak,
empty, hopeless, inadequate, and incomplete.
 Alone
 Weak
 Ignorant
 Homeless
 Incomplete
✘ Sexual Meaning, therefore, makes one realize the need for
some measure of fulfillment that only another person can
give.

4
Mutual Experience of Each Other’s
Worth
✘ Sexual meaning reveals each one’s value to the other. It
unfolds either one’s worth, or lack of it, to another person.
As a woman realizes the value of the man she loves, the man
who loves her also recognizes her value to him. Thus, they
become aware of their value to each other.

5
An Appeal for Mutual Care
✘ In a different vein, sexual meaning invites individuals to go
beyond themselves in order to bring fulfillment unto
themselves as well as others.
✘ Put otherwise, one can understand oneself and one’s life
much better if one is free from egoism and self-centeredness.

6
Sharing Each other’s Being
✘ In human sexuality, two individuals may find mutual sharing
of selves or mutual self-realization. One may discover that
one cannot be oneself without others.

7
Self- Discovery as a person
✘ Sexual meaning makes individuals aware that they
are persons- human beings and not objects or
things. Whenever one responds to an invitation or
sex appeal emanating from another, the former is
conscious of the other as a you, as an I, and as a
person

8
Making Each be Truly
Himself/Herself
✘ Through genuine reciprocity in sexual love, one is
able to understand oneself as a person and not as a
plaything ready or mechanical or physical
manipulations at any time or place.

9
Pain of Unrequited Love
✘ “The man who loves himself too much, is incapable of
loving anyone effectively, including himself” –T. Merton
✘ “ It is true that selfish persons are incapable of loving others,
but they are not capable of loving themselves either” –Erich
Fromm
✘ Paradoxically, what will make the other happy is one’s
happiness, not egotism; one’s self-fulfillment is the other’s
self-fulfillment.

10
Affirmation of Situated
Freedom
✘ Human sex is, in itself, a possibility that offers freedom of
action. That is, it affirms one’s situated freedom: one can
only act within a concrete situation. An individual is not free
to do whatever he/she wishes, whenever he/she wishes to do
it, for individual freedom is situated in physical and social
surroundings and is conditioned by them in its exercise.

11
Moral Discipline
✘ One’s freedom of sexuality should enable him/her to see that
sex implies moral discipline. As long as humans live
together, discipline is necessary, and there can be no
discipline without restraint. Without discipline or constraint,
the inevitable result will be that weak, small, and powerless
are exploited by the powerful and the rich.

12
One’s Inhumanity to Another
✘ Undoubtedly, there are forms of sex that stifle and wreck freedom. Sex,
in other words, can become an obstacle in an individual’s desire to
become fully human.
✘ For instance, if and when sex becomes a degradation of one’s dignity,
then it no longer plays the humanizing role that it should play in a
person’s life.

Sexual Alienation- an individual becomes a slave to sex which, in turn,

becomes an individual’s master.
13
Commitment and
Responsibility
✘ In human sexuality, freedom is seen as one’s openness to
another. One realizes that one is free for someone, for a
person, or for a beloved. In a way, one’s freedom is a
personal commitment to his/her beloved. This commitment
consists of care, concern, and responsibility.
✘ One is not passive but responsible. This responsibility is not
an external imposition but an essential ingredient of true
caring for the other.

14
Safeguarding the Other’s Value
✘ One responds to his/her beloved’s needs, security, and well-
being. One is obligated to protect the other from an harm
that may break down the latter’s self growth and happiness.
✘ One’s responsibility consists of recognizing and
safeguarding the other’s value, for this value binds them
together.

15
Responsibility to and for One
Another
✘ The meaning of responsibility in relation to human sexuality always
points to personhood- to help the other realize his/her selfhood and to
really become himself/herself.
✘ Sexual responsibility, implies justice for “there can be no love without
justice, and no justice without love” –Fletcher
✘ Respect- the ability to see a person as he/she is, to be aware of his/her
unique individuality. Respect means the concern that the other person
should grow and unfold as he/she is.” –Fromm

16
Humanizing and
Dehumanizing
✘ Humanizing- if it enables one to realize oneself as much as it
brings the other to fulfillment, and they both attain mutual
self-realization and unitive self-fulfillment.
✘ Dehumanizing- if and when it destroys a person’s honor and
becomes a degradation of the other.

17
SEXUAL DEVIATION
“It refers to any form of sexual activity which a given social
group regards as unnatural and abnormal”

18
Types
Of
Sexual Deviation

19
Types of Sexual Deviation
Homosexual  Fetishism
Transvestism  Pedophilia
Transsexualism  Sexual attachment to
Exhibitionism children
Sadism  Gerontophilia
Masochism  Mixoscopia or
Voyeurism
Necrophilia
 Pygmalionism
Necrosadism
 Bestiality
Sex Murder
20
Homosexuality
✘ Refers to sexual relationship between individuals of the same sex.
✘ Also know as HOMOEROTISM
✘ Homosexuality among women is called LESBIANISM, after
Lesbos, an island of Greece whose inhabitants are alleged to be
homosexuals,
✘ Homosexuality among men is often called SODOMY, which
denotes homosexual anal intercourse.

21
✘ Older authorities claims that “homosexuality is constitutionally
rooted, that homosexuals are born and not conditioned, and that
hormonal and or genic imbalances causes sexual deviation.
✘ On the other hand, others maintains that “homosexuality and
other sex deviations are not caused by hormonal, constitutional
or genetic factors but that they are the result of psychological or
environmental influences”
✘ According to Goethe “ homosexuality is an old humanity itself
and can, therefore, be considered natural.

22
Transvestism
✘ Also called CROSS-DRESSING or EONISM
✘ Means the obsessive-compulsive need of an individual, almost
always male, to wear clothes worn by the opposite sex.
✘ Homosexuality is the main or primary root of transvestism

23
Transsexualism
✘ Kind of sexual deviation in which an individual (either male or
female) has an obsessive-compulsive desire to belong to the
opposite sex.
✘ Transsexual person does not only want to dress in the clothing
of the other sex but also wishes to have his/her sex organ
surgically changed.

24
Exhibitionism
✘ Refers to an individual’s obsessive-compulsive inclination to
obtain sexual gratification by the public exposure of his/her body
or sex organ.
✘ An EXHIBITIONIST derives distinct satisfaction from
exhibiting his/her nude body and genitals, especially to
individual’s with whom he/she would like to have sexual
relations

25
Sadism
✘ Form of sexual abnormality in which sexual gratification depends
largely on the infliction of pain upon others.
✘ The urge to be somewhat sexually aggressive, especially at times
when one is having difficulty becoming fully aroused or reaching
orgasm, is within the normal range of sexual behavior.
✘ However, when one always requires intense sadistic or violent
behavior for arousal and satisfaction, particularly with unwilling
sex partners, one is indeed acting in a neurotic or deviated fashion .

26
Masochism
✘ Named after Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, an Australian novelist
who described this condition.
✘ It is a type of aberration in which sexual gratification depends
largely on undergoing physical pain or humiliation.
✘ If one is unable to achieve arousal of orgasm without having
intense physical pain or mental humiliation inflicted on oneself,
then one is MASOCHIST.
✘ Clinical psychiatrists have noted that a masochist and a sadist
usually tent to go together, with sadistic individual also being
masochistic and vice versa
27
Necrophilia
✘ Greek words, NEKROS meaning “corpse” and PHILOS,
meaning ‘love”. Necrophilia means “love of corpses or cadavers”
✘ It is an abnormal, erotic attraction to corpses.
✘ A NECROPHILE or NECROPHILIAC, usually a male, is
aroused by then sight of a human corpse and tries to have sexual
relations with it.

28
Necrosadism
✘ Sexual abnormality, usually among men, in which an individual
experiences sexual stimulation and orgasm by mutilating corpses.
✘ NECROSADISTS enjoy cutting up cadavers in order to arouse
themselves sexually to orgasm
✘ This is even worse than necrophilia
✘ This is unusually rare form of sex behavior, statistically speaking.

29
Sex Murder
✘ What distinguishes a sex murderer from the immediately
preceding two types of sexual neurosis is that the former kills
his/her partner solely in order to enhance his/her own arousal and
sexual satisfaction.
✘ This is another state of extreme amentia or psychosis.

30
Fetishism
✘ Another form of sexual aberration in which an individual becomes
sexually aroused by the mere sight of a person’s underwear, hair,
shoe, piece of clothing and so on.
✘ A FETISHIST’s sexual impulses can be aroused and often in
question.

31
Pedophilia
✘ Abnormal condition in which an adult is obsessively-
compulsively attracted to prepubescent youths.
✘ A PEDOPHILE or PEDOPHILIAC has a sexual interest in young
children.
✘ It has been originally called PEDERASTY in view of the anal-
genital relations resorted to by a male pedophile with his boy
partners.

32
Sexual Attachment to Children
✘ Broader than pedophilia
✘ Sexual obsession with children includes both lesbians and
heterosexual fixations as well as the interest of men in boys.
✘ Attracted to young girls, even infants and some females are
sexually obsessed with small boys.

33
Gerontophilia
✘ Greek word, GERONTOS, meaning “old folks” and
PHILOS meaning “love”
✘ Love of older persons
✘ Young girls particularly may be become compulsively
infatuated with aged men, rather than with young boys or
men,

34
Mixoscopia or Voyeurism
✘ Who obsessively and exclusively derives sexual satisfaction
from peeping adventures is a mixoscope or voyeur.
✘ French word, VIOR, means “to see”,
✘ A voyeur is one who sexually gratified by looking a sexual
organs or acts
✘ They need more than ordinary stimulation to provide any
sexual arousal.

35
Pygmalionism
✘ In a Greek mythology, a sculptor names Pygmalion fell in
love with his statue, Galatea, which Aphrodite later brought
to life.
✘ A rare sexual deviation in which individuals are obsessively
and exclusively attracted to and sexually aroused by statues,
especially statues of nude women.

36
Bestiality
✘ Latin word, BESTIALIS meaning “beast”
✘ Refers to sexual intercourse between a human being and an
animal of different species.
✘ Oftentimes, bestiality also implies sodomy which is the
unnatural sexual relation between male persons or between a
human being and an animal.

37
In the
Medical Context
It is often not the kind of sex act that makes a person a
deviant but the manner in which and the attitude with
which he/she performs it. Thus, an attitude may be
treated so that one may overcome one’s aberration.
Sexual neurotics can be helped if they are willing to
undergo and work at a psychotherapeutic process so
that they can understand exactly why they originally
became deviated, how they can are irrationally
maintaining their deviated behavior, and what they can
do to become non-deviated.
38
Preventive
Measures of
Sex Deviation .

Some of the prophylactic measures that can be taken to prevent

a boy or a girl from becoming a sex deviated are as follows:

39
A child should be raised with a
healthy, thoroughly non-guilty
attitude towards human sexuality.
1 Form an early age, one should be
taught that sex is good, beautiful
and beneficial

A child should be taught that some

laws are necessary for the governing
of sex, love and marital relationships,
and these laws are protective of one’s
2 right to sex and happiness; hence ,
they must be followed for one’s own
good and the good of others
40
Children should be given extensive and intensive
sex education, in an objective and impersonal
manner, and should be particularly instructed
3 about sex deviations. They should be shown that
deviant sexual behavior is childish and disturbed’;
hence, it is to be combatted and gotten rid of

Children should be strongly encouraged to have sexual

experiences and to be strongly unguilty about their
participation, guilty feelings about one’s sexual
experiences are one of the causes of sex indifference
or bitterness which may possibly develop into a certain
4
form of deviation.
41
Children should be raised and nurtured in such a
way that they like themselves and are willing to
take on risks of sex-love challenges. They should
be made to realize that life is a blending of
5 success and failure, love and hate, happiness
and sorrow and misery and bliss. In the midst of
these ever changing situations, one should brace
oneself and expect not only the best but also the
worst things to happen.

42
PORNOGRAPHY
AND
PROSTITUTION

43
PORNOGRAPHY AND PROSTITUTION

 From the Greek word , PORNOGRAPHOS, which means

“writing prostitutes” (porne, “prostitute,” and graphein, “to
write”)

 PORNOGRAPHY means obscene and prurient literature or art.

 Presently it has come to mean the deliberate employment or

use of sexually arousing pictorials or reading matter.

 It is human nature to be sexually excited by sex stimuli.

44
PORNOGRAPHY AND PROSTITUTION

 If when a man or a woman, however becomes so addicted

to pornography that he/she cannot get sexually aroused
without viewing pornographic representations or lascivious
sex scenes, such a person’s compulsive obsession with
prurient
obscenity is deviated

45
PORNOGRAPHY AND PROSTITUTION
 PROSTITUTION on the other hand involves the selling of
sexual services for a price, either in cash or in kind.

 Female prostitutes in the Philippines, locally known as

“hospitality girls”, include “hostesses” in cocktail lounges
and nightclubs, waitresses, go-go dancers, sauna bath
attendants, masseuses, pick-up girls, stripteasers, and
those in casas (red houses where girls are numbered and
displayed for customers to choose from)
46
PORNOGRAPHY AND PROSTITUTION

 High-class call girls are composed of college students,

movie starlets, models, stewardesses, promo girls, and
those in the entertainment and hotel businesses.

 Male prostitutes or call boys constitute university students,

stewards, tour guides and models.

 Low-class male prostitutes are waiters, sauna boys, go-go

dancers, male hosts, and stand-bys
47
PORNOGRAPHY AND PROSTITUTION

 Child prostitutes ages seven to fifteen, likewise, abound

in Metro Manila.

 Young children of their age are forced into prostitution

due to poverty

48
In The
Moral Context
Sex is beautiful. It is one of the greatest inspiration with which the
Lord of creation has gifted both men and women. Without sex, life would
be less meaningful, less fulfilled and people could not be God’s partners in
creation. Sex is, therefore, God-given and the individual’s source of
strength as God’s steward on earth. Likewise, the human anatomy (the
naked male and female is the greatest masterpiece of the Creator.). Thus,
an individual in the nude should reflect the marvelous ingenuity if divine
engineering and architecture which dwarfs all types of hi-tech inventions
in the fields of science and biotechnology.

49
Sexual Anomalies
and
Ailments
Sexual Anomalies and Ailments
✘ May be devoid of any moral bearing; hence, they are more
pathological than ethical in nature
✘ A number of these abnormal conditions may be voluntary in
cause insofar as they are the side effect of deliberate and
willed acts
Example: STD

51
Dyspareunia
✘ Painful intercourse
Various physical causes of this abnormality in the female include:
1. A small vaginal entrance
2. Inflammation of the sex organs
3. A thick or inelastic hymen
4. An infected ovary or tube
5. A shrinkage of the vagina (older females)
6. Sagging of the pelvic structure
7. Lack of lubrication or poor sexual technique
52
✘ Various physical causes of this abnormality in the female include:
1. Inflamed urinary opening
2. Extremely tight or irritated foreskin (uncircumcised male)

Psychological causes or origins of dyspareunia; both male and females

Example:
 Fear of intercourse and pregnancy
 Hostility towards the spouse and bodily tension

✘ Needs to consult a medical specialist

53
Vaginismus
✘ Occurs when strong spasmodic contractions of the muscles at the
entrance of the vagina result in the blocking of penile-vaginal
intromission
✘ Caused by extreme fears of sexual intercourse and poor personal
relations between sex mates

✘ Medical and Psychological examination

54
Priapism
✘ Priapos in Greek mythology
- the God of male procreative power
✘ Prolonged and persistent erection of the penis or clitoris
✘ A rare sex anomaly, it results from certain injuries and diseases of
the spinal cord
✘ Sometimes caused by neurological diseases or genito-urinary
irritation and may accompany affliction
Such as: leukemia, tularemia, sickle cell, anemia,
syphilis and multiple sclerosis
✗ Medical attention is required

55
Nymphomania
✘ An extreme and ungovernable sexual desire in women
✘ Exceptionally rare and seems to be caused by unusual
conditions of neuromuscular disease
NYMPHOMANIAC
- has an intense sexual craving that is not relieved by
intercourse or orgasm, which may drive her to near madness
- are seldom found outside the disturbed wards of mental
hospital
✘ Psychotherapy

56
Satyriasis
✘ Excessive and uncontrollable sexual desire in men. This intense and
insatiable desire on the part of a male result from severe
neuropsychiatric disorder.

✘ An individual suffering from this condition keeps restlessly seeking

heterosexual acceptance and love in order to relieve his own severe
feelings of inadequacy, lack of masculinity or general feelings of
emotional disturbances.

57
Hermaphroditism
✘ Hermaphroditus in Greek mythology
- became united with the nymph Salmacis in a single body
✘ A very rare condition in which an individual has both male
and female sexual organs

Hermaphrodites
- characteristics of both sexes

58
Cryptorchidism
✘ From Greek word kryptos which means hidden
✘ A sex anomaly in which a male has one or two hidden or
undescended testicles.
✘ If both testicles were concealed, stopped growing, lost sperm
producing and hormone-generating functions
-the male may fail to develop major masculine development
physical characteristics
✘ If only one testicle is undescended
- the male may still be quite potent and fertile
✘ Hormonal and surgical treatment
59
Penis Captivus
✘ The capture of the penis by the vagina in such a way that the male
cannot release himself
✘ A woman spasm will seize and squeeze her partner’s penis at its
base end, constricting and preventing the male from losing his
erection
✘ Every male so caught by a vaginal seizure in a sexual encounter
would lose erection (detumescene) out of fear or discomfort and
would easily be able to disentangle himself from the vaginal
squeeze or constriction.
✘ A very rare condition.

60
SEXUALLY
TRANSMITTED
DISEASES
SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
✘ Known as venereal disease (VD)
✘ Spread by direct sexual contact are syphilis and gonorrhea
✘ Syphilis is transmitted by non-genital contact such as lips to lips or
touching an individual who has the disease
Gonorrhea may be transmitted non-sexually to young females,
whose vaginal mucus membranes are thin

62
✘ The first signs of gonorrhea are usually felt about two to five
days after transmission of infection

✘ The male feels pain upon urinating and his urinal discharge is
sometimes blood tinted
The female have painful, frequent urination, itching and burning
of the vulva and discharge from he vagina and urethral

63
✘ To avoid becoming infected with syphilis and gonorrhea, one should
avoid sexual contact with individuals who are likely to have these
diseases.
✘ VD is more common from the lower-class backgrounds especially
among prostitutes or men who frequently engage in sex with them
✘ VD is rare among non-promiscuous individuals from the middle
class and professional backgrounds

64
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
✘ A fatal disease that destroys the body’s immune defense
mechanism or ability to fight off some infections and cancers
✘ AIDS is difficult to cure. Only two known AIDS patient have
recovered
✘ Cause by a virus called HIV that is passed from one person to
another person through the blood or semen. It usually transmitted
through sex with an infected individual or by sharing contaminated
drug needles.
✘ An infected woman can pass the virus to her newborn child

65
✘ Homosexual and bisexual men and people who shoot drugs are the
two groups ate greatest risk for AIDS. Like the IV drug abusers get
the virus by sharing their needles with other users who already have
the virus in their blood.
✘ Its milder form is called AIDS-related complex (ARC)
✘ People also get AID by having sex with people who have the virus.
Either male or female prostitutes can carry the virus which they may
get from their customers or if they themselves are often IV drug
users. They can also spread disease to prospective sex adventure.

66
✘ An individual infected with the disease may not get sick and
he/she may not know he/she has been infected yet still can
spread the disease to other people either by having sex or sharing
one’s drug.

✘ To play safe:
 One should see a doctor or go to a clinic to find out if one
may already have been infected with the virus
 One may ask for an AIDS antibody test and an examination

67
✘ AIDS researchers reassure people that they cannot the disease
from kissing, touching, eating, sneezing and touching clothing
and beddings. Kisses on the skin are safe.
✘ The virus can be in saliva, but so far, there is no record of any
people who have gotten AIDS from mouth to mouth or lips to
lips kissing.
✘ One cannot get AIDS by touching or being near someone with
AIDS neither can one get AIDS by eating with a person who
has the disease.

72
Application
of
Ethical Theories

✘ Natural law ethics perceives human sexuality as sacred
insofar as it is God-given; “ God created man in His
own image,.. Male & Female he created them”
(Genesis 1:27)
✘ In other words, God created man and woman as sexual
partners in order to “be fruitful, multiply and replenish
the earth” ( genesis 1:28)
✘ What is morally evil or immoral is the misuse and
abuse of sex.
74

✘ For example: pornography and prostitution are
sexual explotations. They defile, debase and
“desacralize” sex insofar as the latter become a
marketable item, a commercial good, or a
profitable commodity.

75

✘ Sexual deviations, which are natural aberration
rooted in the particular kind of nervous system
an individual has, they may be in themselves
neither morally good or morally evil.
✘ Sexual aberration may have no moral
significance inasmuch as they are organic
aberrations or even form of neurosis.

76

✘ The act of behaviour of a sex deviant may be
involuntary and non-imputable.
✘ His/her acts become voluntary and imputable as
soon as the intellect adverts to them, and the free
will accepts or rejects them.

77

✘ Kant’s ethical principle, “always act so as to
treat humanity, either yourself or others, always
as an end and never only as a means,”
✘ Kant’s moral injunction enjoin every individual
to treat all people (including oneself) as an end

78

✘ It seems that, for, Kant, in mastrubation, one is
using, misusing, and abusing oneself; one is
treating oneself on as a means or an object.
✘ In the same manner, prostitution is another way
in which the prostetiture treats him/herself only
as means insofar as he/she sell himself/herself
for both financial and sexual considerations

79

✘ Another way of treating others only as a means
rather than as ends is pornography. A man or a
woman in the nude, for instance is used and

manipulated for his/her own commercial value.

✘ Under Rawl’s concept of justice, the exploitation
of sex is not legitimate. Every man and woman

is held inviolable.

80

✘ This inviolability founded on justice is so sacrosanct
that no individual, rich or poor, male or female should

be used as a means for another person’s end.

✘ Furthermore, speaking of justice in human relations,
Rawls stresses one’s duty to respect others as persons
and never to take advantage of them nor use them for
one’s own personal gains.

81

✘ In the context of Fletcher’s situationism, an evil
means does not always nullify a good end; it all
depends upon a given situation
✘ Survival is the name of the game. This is why
Fletcher contends that circumstances do alter cases
✘ The act that is right in some circumstances may be
wrong in others.

82

✘ In the context of Fletcher’s situationism, an evil
means does not always nullify a good end; it all
depends upon a given situation
✘ Survival is the name of the game. This is why
Fletcher contends that circumstances do alter cases.
✘ The act that is right in some circumstances may be
wrong in others.

83

✘ One may interpret Fletcher’s precept to mean that
prostitution, out of necesity and survival may be
morally wrong.
✘ Perhaps, this can be upheld with regard to
pornography and nudity, depending on the “ relative
weight of the ends and means and motives and
consequences all taken together, as weight by agapeic
love”

84

✘ It is obvious from the pragmatist’s and situationists
moral stands that poverty leads individual to vices- in
this respect, postitution along with pornography and
nudity.
✘ Poverty thrives in an unjust socio-economic order
✘ This is the main cause of child prstitution in the
philippines

85

✘ In this connection socio-economic structures of
society may minimize or reduce to a
considerable degree, the practice of child
prostetuition.
✘ The foregoing ethical applications should not be
taken as moral dogmas but only particular views
and perceptions, which are parts of man’s
conscientious efforts and attempts to justify
his/her moral decisions.
86

✘ In short, the standard of good and evil remains
open, challenging question as there is no ready-
made norm of morality; hence, there is no ready-
made answer of all moral problems.
✘ Morality is a dynamic process, so an individual’s
dialectical growth in self-awareness increases
his/her consciousness of right and wrong.

87

✘ It call on every freedom-conscious person to act and
decide by and for himself/herself and not only rely
on the stars or any outside power transcending
him/her.
✘ Despite the outcome of one’s moral judgments,
whether he/she survives or dies, the stars will
continue twinkling and the sun shining.
