INTRODUCTIO
N
Water quality plays an important role in the
field of fisheries, especially for aquaculture
activities and in the productivity of aquatic
animals

The influence of water quality on

cultivation activities is very
pimportant, so that monitoring of
water quality parameters must be
carried out by cultivators.
Ammonia in the waters comes from the
remains of fish metabolism dissolved in
water, fish feces, and from fish food that is
not eaten and settles at the bottom of the
aquaculture pond.
The aquaponic system reduces ammonia by
absorbing aquaculture waste water or wastewater
using plant roots so that the absorbed ammonia
undergoes an oxidation process with the help of
oxygen and bacteria, ammonia is converted to nitrate
Research

Research
method
This study used an aquaponic system with water
spinach as a filter to reduce ammonia. The materials
used in this study were feed and water spinach plants.
The research design used was using 4 treatments
with each treatment using a different number of kale
plants, namely A (without kale plants), B (10 kale
plants), C (20 kale plants) and D (30 kale plants). This
research lasted for 60 days. Water samples were
taken every 20 days every morning and evening.

Ammonia reduction is calculated using the equation

N = No –Nt
No = concentration of ammonia in the inlet line
Nt = concentration of ammonia in the outlet channel.
Finding and
Discussion
Finding and
Discussion
• The lowest concentration of ammonia
occurred in the first sampling for all
treatments.
• The highest concentration of ammonia
occurred at the last sampling for all
treatments.
• The higher the concentration of ammonia
affects the ability of the kale plant to absorb
the accumulated ammonia.
• In the last sampling in the ABC and D
treatments the lowest ammonia concentration
was in treatment D where the highest number
of kale was 30 stems.
Conclusions
The aquaponic system is effective
for reducing ammonia in
aquaculture systems. But it must be
with a large number of plants and
cannot be done in a relatively long
time.
