INTRODUCTION
• The crime that involves and uses computer devices and Internet, is
known as cybercrime.
• Cybercrime can be committed against an individual or a group, it
can also be committed against government and private
organizations. It may be intended to harm someone’s reputation,
physical harm, or even mental harm.
• These types of crimes involve different threats (like virus, bugs etc.)
and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks.
HISTORY OF CYBER CRIME
• The first recorded cyber crime took place in the year 1820. That is not
surprising considering the fact that the abacus which is thought to be
earliest form of a computer, has been around since 3500 B.C. in
India , Japan and China. The era of modern computers, however,
began withy the analytical engine of Charles Babbage.
• The first spam email took place in 1976 when it was sent out over the
ARPANT.
• The first virus was installed on an Apple computer in 1982 when a
high school student , Rich skrenta , developed the EIK Cloner.
CATEGORIES OF CYBER CRIME
We can be categorized mainly in two ways :-
• The Computer as a Target :- using a computer to attacks
other computers. e.g. Hacking, Virus/Worm attacks, DOS
attack etc.
• The computer as a weapon :- using a computer to commit
real world crimes. e.g. Cyber Terrorism, IPR violations,
Credit card frauds, EFT frauds, Pornography etc.
Moreover we further categorized as follows :-
1. Unauthorized Access:-
A person gains logical or physical access without permission to a
network, system, application, data, or other resource
2. Hacking & Cracking:-
Every act committed towards breaking into a computer and/or network
is hacking. Hackers write or use ready made computer programs to
attack the target computer. They possess the desire to destruct and they
get the kick out of such destruction. Some hackers hack for personal
monetary gains, such as to stealing the credit card information,
transferring money from various bank accounts to their own account
followed by withdrawal of money.
3. Cyber Fraud/Online Fraud:-
The net is a boon for people to conduct business effectively, very
quickly. Net is also an open invitation to fraudsters and online frauds
are becoming increasingly out of control.
4. Cyber Theft:-
Stealing of financial and/or personal information through the use of
computers for making its fraudulent or other illegal use.
5. Cyber Terrorism:-
Targeted attacks on military installations, power plants, air traffic
control, banks, trail traffic control, telecommunication networks are
the most likely targets. Others like police, medical, fire and rescue
systems etc
CONCLUSION
Cybercrime is indeed getting the recognition it
deserves. However , it is not going to restricted that
easily . In fact , it is highly likely that cyber crime and
its hackers will continue developing and upgrading to
stay ahead of the law.
So , to make us a safer we must need cyber security.
