What is university?
A university is an institution of higher education and research which awards
academic degrees in several academic disciplines.
History of university
• The original latin word universitas refers in general to "a number of persons associated into one
body, a society, company, community, guild, corporation, etc".
• In modern usage the word has come to mean "An institution of higher education offering tuition in
mainly non-vocational subjects and typically having the power to confer degrees".
First university in the world
• The University of Bologna in Italy is the oldest Western institution in the world. It began as an esteemed
school of civil law in the late 11th century.
• This stemmed from a strong interest in the city’s political affairs, a result of conflicts between the Papacy and
the Empire.
• The university has been operating since 1088, making it the oldest university in the world.
• It largely specialised in doctorate studies, but now offers a wide array of programmes across all levels.
• In 2021, over 90,291 students were enrolled at the University of Bologna. 7,062 of these were international
students.

Harvard University

Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1636
as Harvard College.

The University of Cambridge is a public collegiate research university in Cambridge, England. Founded in 1209, the
University of Cambridge is the third-oldest university in continuous operation.
First University In Pakistan
• The University of the Punjab also referred to as Punjab University, is a public, research,
coeducational higher education institution located in Lahore, Pakistan. Punjab University is the
oldest and largest public sector university in Pakistan. University spread over an area of 1,800
acres

• With multiple campuses in Gujranwala, Jhelum, and Khanspur, the university was formally
established by the British Government after convening the first meeting for establishing higher
education institutions in October 1882 at Simla.

University Of Agriculture, Faisalabad
The foundation stone of UAF was laid in 1906 with the name of Punjab Agricultural College and Research Institute, Lyallpur
which was upgraded as the West Pakistan Agricultural University, Lyallpur in 1961 and now the University of Agriculture,
Faisalabad since 1973.

Bahaudin Zikriya University, Multan
Bahauddin Zakariya University is a public university with its main campus located in Multan, Pakistan. Bahauddin Zakariya
University was founded in 1975 as Multan University, and is the 2nd largest university in Punjab.
Area: The main campus is spread over 960 acres of land.
