 Defining adolescence
 Adolescence meaning “To grow up”
 Adolescents are individuals in the transitional stage of development between childhood
and adulthood. This period, known as adolescence, generally encompasses the ages of 10
to 19 years.
 Defining peers:
 Peers are individuals who share similar characteristics, such as age, social status, or
interests. In the context of adolescence, peers typically refer to individuals of the same
age group, often friends or classmates, with whom one interacts and forms social
connections.

 Peer relationships can influence various aspects of an individual’s life, including


behaviour, attitudes, and social development.

 Peer influence plays a crucial role in shaping adolescent behaviour, both positively
and negatively.

 Positive Effects: adolescents often model the behaviours of their peers. Positive
influences can lead to the adoption of constructive behaviours such as Studying,
participating in extracurricular activities, and practicing healthy habits.

 (A) Social Support: Positive peer relationships provide emotional support, fostering a
sense of belonging and reducing feelings of isolation. This support can contribute to better
mental and emotional well-being.
 (B) Encouragement of Personal Growth: Peers can inspire each other to set and achieve

 Negative Effects: Negative peer pressure can lead to conformity with risky behaviours,
substance abuse, or engagement in activities that may have detrimental consequences.

 (A) Risk taking behaviours: Adolescents are more likely to engage in risky behaviours
when influenced by peers who endorse or participate in such activities.

 (B) Identity Formation: Peer influence can impact the development of an adolescent’s
identity, sometimes leading to conformity to fit in with a particular group, even if it goes
against their own values.
