INTRODUCTION
• Okra (Abelmoscus esculentus) known as lady’s finger is a vegetable
crop commonly grown by most rural farmers in sub-saharan Africa.
• In Nigeria, okra rank third among fruit vegetables (after tomato and
pepper) in terms of consumption and production.
• The world production is estimated at 6 million tonnes per year and
India followed by Nigeria and Sudan
• Consequently, okra deteriorate rapidly as there is a poorly developed
storage and preservation technology for okra thus, there is a widening
gap between the supply and demand of the product in Nigeria (IITA,
1993).
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
• According to Kebede and Gan (1999), the main sources of farm income for
small and limited resource farmers are basically arable crop production,
vegetables and non-vegetable crops. Its importance has long been recognized
the world over (Ndaeyov et al., 2007). Okra is the most important fruit
vegetable crop and a source of calorie (4550 kCal/kg) for human consumption.

• According to Central Bank of Nigeria (1996), the average growth rate of

vegetable crop including okra produced in Nigeria between 1989 and 1993
was 14.0% compared to 6.4% of cassava, 18% for palm oil and 3.8% for maize.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objective of the study is to analyze on contributions of Okra

leaf (Abelmoscus esculentus) marketing in Ibarapa central local
government area of Oyo State
• Specific objectives of the study are to:
• describe the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents in the
study area;
• determine the profitability of okra leaf marketing in the study area;
• examine the productivity of resource-use by the farmers in the study
area
• analyze constrain facing okra leaf maketing in the study area.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY

• Apart from considering the fact that rapid population growth tends to
increase market demand, it would be justifiable to have adequate
understanding of the operation surrounding okra production being one
of the most important crops in the country. The research work is
expected to enhance farmers’ resource allocation so as to achieve
optimal goal within the limited available resources.
METHODOLOGY
• Study Area

• This study will be conducted in Ibarapa areas of Oyo State. The Ibarapa area falls within latitudes 70.15ꞌ N
and 70.55ꞌ N and longitudes 30E and 30.30ꞌ E. It is located approximately 100 Km north of the coast of
Lagos, and about 95 Km west of the Oyo state capital and the neighboring city of Ibadan.

Population of the Study

• Population of the study will be okra leaf marketers in Ibarapa central local government area of Oyo State.

Sampling Technique and Sampling Size

• Sampling techniques: A Multi-stage sampling technique will be for this study.

• The first stage will involve the purposive selection of Ibarapa Central Local Government Areas due to large
production and maketing of okra leaf
METHODOLOGY (CONT’D)

• The second stage will involve the purposive selection of two town namely;igboora, idere in Ibarapa
central LGA due to the presence of large okra leaf marketers

• The third stage will involve the random selection of two wards from igboora.one ward from idere
out of ten wards in Ibarapa central local government area and the [30] thirty respondents will be
selected randomly from each ward marketing a total [ 90] ninety respondents from this study.

Method of data collection

• Primary data will be used for this study. This will be collected through the administration of a well-
structured questionnaire to collect data from the respondents and responses will be found useful for
data analysis. The data collected will include respondents’ personal information, processing inputs,
and cost of production, income and expenditure.
METHODOLOGY (CONT’D)
Method of Data Analyses
• Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and other statistical/econometric tools. The socio-
economic factors were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency and percentage.
• The profitability of okra leaf marketing will be analyzed using gross margin analysis. This is implicitly
represented as follows:
• GM = TR-TVC
• ∑ni-1 PiQi - ∑ni-1 CiXi ----------------- (i)
• Where
• GM = Gross margin
• TR = Total revenue
• TVC = Total variable cost of production and

Again, the production and marketing problems were analyzed using descriptive statistics
