LUKE 17:11-19 – JESUS HEALS TEN MEN WITH LEPROSY
STORY

 Ten men with leprosy met Jesus as he was passing through Samaria
on His way to Jerusalem
 Jesus told the men to go to a priest and be declared clean.
 As the men were making their way to find a priest, they realized
that they had been healed of their leprosy.
 Nine of the men went on their way.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE STORY

ONLY ONE OF THE MEN, A SAMARITAN, RETURNED TO

THANK JESUS AND GIVE PRAISES TO GOD.
DEPARTURE
POINT
LEPROSY, SIN AND SEPARATION FROM GOD

 Lepers are strictly forbidden to get near healthy people. They were
outcasts. They are banned from society.
 Leprosy put you outside of a camp for quarantine. It can separate
you from your loved ones.
 Lepers are considered ceremonially unclean – meaning they cannot
go to the temple to worship God.
 Like leprosy, sin does not only destroy our relationships with your
loved ones but it can also separate is from the presence of God.
 Sin puts us at enmity with God, severing our relationship with Him
which leads to our separation from God.
SPIRITUAL HEALING AND CLEANSING

Only Jesus can provide spiritual healing and cleansing. We are sinners
deserving judgment, and God being a just God must punish sin. If God
were to let sin go unpunished, it would mean that He Himself would
be unjust.

How could God justify sinners without himself being tainted? He did
it by bearing the justice and wrath that sin deserved when the Father
sent the Son to die on the cross.
TURNING POINT
JUNCTION
HOW DID THE LEPERS CRIED OUT FOR HELP

 They addressed Jesus as their MASTER.

 The lepers ask for pity – a familiar cry that they have been uttering
since they were diagnosed with leprosy and cast out of the village.
 HAVE PITY – translates to “be greatly concerned about someone
in need, have compassion/mercy/pity for someone.”
 The lepers did not ask for healing but ask for pity, for whatever
Jesus might give them – food, clothing, shelter, whatever Jesus
decided to offer because they are aware of Jesus’ reputation for
compassion.
HUMANS ARE LIMITED

Being limited is inherent to humanity, even before the Fall of Man in

Genesis. When God created us, he made us in his image BUT he did
not make us exactly like him. We bear God’s image but it is normal for
us to be limited in some capacity as his created beings.

Our limitations as humans remind us to worship the God who made us

for His own glory and to fully rely and surrender everything to Him.
CRYING OUT TO GOD FOR HELP

We should always remember that we can always trust God to help us at

all times.

Crying out to God is an admission of one’s coming to the end of self

and placing hope in God alone.
IMPORTANCE OF ACKNOWLEDGING GOD’S ROLE IN OUR
LIVES

You can rely on God to keep His promises even in seemingly impossible
and messy circumstances.

A decision to acknowledge God is the first step in deciding to believe in

God’s promises. It is our daily submission to His Lordship.

This submission applies to “all our ways” – our homes, work,

relationships, attitudes, and actions. Every action we take and decision
we make should be done with God as the center. God must hold the
place of highest importance, and the way we live should reflect this
reality.
THE UNTHANKFUL NINE: WHEN WE FORGET TO GIVE
THANKS

The ten lepers were given a great gift. The problem was, nine of them
did not receive it with true thankfulness. Sure they were happy that they
received the gift of healing, but they did not CHOOSE to thank the gift
giver. When Jesus asked, “Where are the other nine?” He was clearly
asking, “Why aren’t they giving thanks to God?“

The same question could be asked of us today: “Why aren’t these people
giving Me thanks?”. Jesus has given us the unbelievable free gift of
forgiveness and salvation. We didn’t have to do anything to earn it.
Even though our sin deserves to be punished, Jesus took that
punishment for us when He died on the cross.
THE UNTHANKFUL NINE: WHEN WE FORGET TO GIVE
THANKS (continuation)

But the problem is, many people accept the free gift of forgiveness and
salvation and never do anything to show their THANKFULNESS to
Jesus.

The message from God is clear: we should have a heart filled to

overflowing with thanksgiving to God, and we should also tell God and
the others how thankful we are! GOD HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR
US! HE DESERVES OUR THANKS!
JOURNEY TO
TRANSFORMATIO
N
THE GRATEFUL LEPER

Jesus offered this leper more than he offered the others. All ten lepers
received healing, but the grateful leper received a deeper salvation. His
faith has prompted him to return to the feet of Jesus in thanks, and that
personal contact, that personal submission signifies a soul healing that
more than skin deep.
ROLE OF GRATITUDE OF RENEWING OUR HEARTS AND
MINDS

A clear lesson is that Jesus expects us to show gratitude. In the account

of the Thankful Leper, Jesus is clearly angry at the unthankfulness of
the nine lepers who did not return. We must train ourselves to show
thanks, to give thanks, to be filled with thanksgiving. Without being
thankful, we won’t be pleasing to God.

A life of thanksgiving is a life of prayer. Prayer first. Before the things

we have to do, pray first. Before we get immersed in our everyday
activities, pray first. Thanksgiving first.
SHOWING OUR THANKFULNESS AND GRATITUDE TO
GOD

One of the truest ways to demonstrate your appreciation to God is to

simply pray and tell Him. God loves to hear from us. Prayer is the
simplest and surest way to convey our appreciation to God.

We should be thankful at all times – may it be good and bad. We must

remember that God allow things to happen and it is always for our
own good and because he has a plan for us.
WAYS TO DEVELOP THE ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

 Begin the day with thanks. Let your first words be thanksgiving
to the Lord. If it is hard for you to remember to begin that day in
conversation with the Lords, you may write your prayer on a piece
of paper or keep a journal.

 Thank Him in your worship. One of the easiest ways to thank the
Lord is to sing praises to Him. Sing songs of praises around the
house, in the car, on walks, and in your daily devotion.
WAYS TO DEVELOP THE ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
(continuation)

 Speak of all of His benefits. There is no better way of

remembering the Lord’s benefits than to recall them and speak of
them often.

 Thank Him as you read His Word. When you spend time with
the Lord reading His word, pause and thank Him for what He is
revealing and teaching you. Thank Him for giving you His Word.
As you linger in the Lord’s presence, you have access to
immeasurable treasures.
WAYS TO DEVELOP THE ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
(continuation)

 Thank Him for the hard things. Because life is still broken in the
presence of sin, we encounter difficulties everyday. Pausing to be
thankful turns our hearts away from ourselves and back towards
the Lord.
THANK GOD FIRST
God gives us every good thing we have, like the air we
breathe and the happy moments we enjoy. Saying "thank
you" helps us remember that everything we have is a gift
from God, and we don't deserve it.
 I will remember the story of the 10 Lepers, always thanking God first for His
blessings in my life.
 I will keep a gratitude journal and write down one thing I am thankful for every
day.
 I will say a 'thank you' prayer before every meal, appreciating God's provision.
 I will share at least one thing I am thankful for during our family discussions
about God's blessings.
 I will be content with what I have and avoid comparing myself to others,
practicing gratitude for my unique qualities.

BOARDING the gratitude express

Our Bible lesson teaches us something important about

our relationship with God. Just like those lepers, all of
us were once sick with something even more serious
than leprosy. We were sick with sin, which separates
us from God.
DEPARTURE POINT

Just as leprosy separates the ten individuals from

society, sin separates us from God. Sin is like a disease
that taints our hearts and separates us from His
presence. Think of things you have done that hurt God
and other people.
Gospel encounter junction
The lepers recognized their need for a Savior, just as we should
acknowledge our need for Jesus. God, in His great love for us,
sent us our Savior Jesus Christ, who can heal our hearts and make
us clean again. Jesus came to save us from sin, just as He saved
the lepers from their sickness. You have to make a decision which
track at this junction you would go. Do you want to be cleansed
from sin? If yes, pray. Admit that you have sinned. Believe that
Jesus’ death paid for the punishment of sin, and His resurrection
showed that God has forgiven you. And commit to follow His
ways all the days of your life.
TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY
Of the ten healed, only one leper – a Samaritan – returned to
Jesus to express his gratitude. Samaritans during Jesus’ time
were shunned and discriminated. The Samaritan Leper’s
story teaches us that importance of recognizing God’s
blessings and thanking Him regardless of our circumstances
or societal status. He understood that before he could be
thankful for anything else, he had to be thankful to God. So,
he made sure to express his gratitude to the One who had
made it possible.
Dear God, Our Heavenly Father,

You are our Great Provider and Helper. Thank You for teaching us
about being thankful, just like the story of the ten lepers. We learned
that it’s important to be grateful for everything.

Please help us see the good things in our lives and always have the
attitude of gratitude in every situation, whether it is good or bad.

We love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
