Nouns

The Noun is a word expressing substance


in the concept of which not only names
of living beings and lifeless thing, but
also names of abstract notions are
included.
There are three genders of nouns

Masculine

Feminine

Neutral
Noun
Common Proper
Ukraine, Ann

Countable Uncountable
Dog Water

Abstract Concrete

Countable Nouns
Countable Nouns – those that can be counted.
Countable nouns are for things we can count using
numbers. They have a singular and a plural form.
The singular form can use the determiner "a" or
"an".

A/one Bottle – two bottles

One/a chair – two chairs


Uncountable Nouns
Uncountable nouns we cannot divide into
separate elements. We cannot "count" them.
For example, we cannot count "milk". We can
count "bottles of milk" or "liters of milk", but
we cannot count "milk" itself. Here are some
more uncountable nouns:
music, art, love, happiness
advice, information, news
furniture, luggage
rice, sugar, butter, water
electricity, gas, power
money, currency
The Plural of Nouns
Most nouns form their plural by adding -s
A dog dogs

Nouns ending in -s, -ss, -sh,-ch, -x or –z, take -es in


the plural
A box boxes

Nouns ending in a consonant +o, take -es in the plural

A Potato Potatoes

Nouns ending in a vowel +o, take -s in the plural
A radio radios

Nouns ending in a vowel+ y take only-s in the plural


a joy joys

Nouns ending in a consonant +y, take -ies in the plural

a strawberry strawberries

Nouns ending in -f or -ef, take -ves in plural
a wolf wolves

BUT some nouns ending in -f or –ef take only -s


roof-roofs
giraffe-giraffes

Some nouns of Greek or Latin origin form their plural by


their suffixes
