encompasses a wide range of styles and subgenres,
including swing, bebop, fusion, and free jazz,
among others.

Not all jazz is improvised. Most pieces contain both composed and

improvised parts. Written works are written using basic articulation
and are performed in jazz through the performer's delivery and

articulation following the styles of jazz. In jazz ensemble, a soloist
plays the improvised patterns. Usually, he/she creates jazz patterns
following the chord of the plece, or in an ad libitum style.
Improvisation is based on harmonic pattern or series of chords.
This is repeated over and over while the improviser or the soloist
creates melodies about it

characteristics are felt from percussion instruments (drums and cymbals) and
bass player. Quadruple is the usual meter used in jazz. Syncopation is used by

beats 1 and 3 of regular rhythm may be the weak beats in jazz music. Therefore,
the beats with emphasis are transferred on beats 2 and 4 of every measure.

often flattened or lowered. Jazz music is written in basic notations but
performed differently.

The big band was not literally "big" by the standard of today's
Home marching band, but at least double the size of the New Orleans-style
jazz combo. The orchestra of Duke Ellington, who was a jazz pianist
Library and arranger, had four trumpets, three trombones, five reed Instruments
(clarinet and saxophone players), and the rhythm section of string bass,
guitar, piano, and drums. This group had 16 players. Swing became the
favorite dance music of the 1930s. Swing is said to be the popular jazz
style played by the big band around the 1930s-1940s. It was very
improvisatory with fast tempo and danceable beat. Benny Goodman,
the "King of Swing, made this style famous in the 1930s.
