TO INFINITIVE

1. The TO INFINITIVE is used after certain verbs of thinking and feeling:


(O TO + infinitivo é usado após verbos de pensamento e sentimento)

choose hate like prefer


decide hope love remember
expect intend (pretender) mean (ter intenção de) want
forget learn plan would like/love

He is planning to visit England next summer.


I hope to get back to work soon.
2. After verbs of saying (verbos de expressão)
agree promise refuse threaten (ameaçar)

He threatened to quit school.

3. Verbs that are followed by a direct object and then the to-infinitive:

(verbos seguidos por um Objeto Direto + To Infinitivo)

advise ask encourage expect intend


invite order persuade remind want
warn would like would love would prefer

The teacher persuaded her students to take part in an international competition.


Why did you ask him not to leave the room ?
4. We also use the to-infinitive to express purpose (to answer why?)

in order to / in order not to / so as to / so as not to

Mr. Johnson kept quiet so as not to disappoint his wife.

Mrs Weaver had to work full-time in order to earn a living for herself and her family of five
children.
