Potassium

permanganate
KMnO4
An Important Compounds of Transition Elements
Preparation
● Potassium permanganate - KMnO4
● Obtained from pyrolusite ore - MnO2
Preparation
● K2MnO4 disproportionates in a neutral or acidic solution to give permanganate.

COMMERCIALLY
Preparation
In the laboratory, a manganese (II) ion salt is oxidised by peroxodisulphate to permanganate.

● The hydrogen ion concentration of the solution plays an important part in influencing the reaction.
Properties
It has two physical properties:
● intense colour- purple
● weak temperature dependent paramagnetism

The manganate and permanganate ions are tetrahedral; the green manganate is paramagnetic with one unpaired electron but the
permanganate is diamagnetic.

● The π-bonding takes place by overlap of p orbitals of oxygen with d orbitals of manganese
