What is Fashion?
• Fashion is the art of applying design, aesthetics, clothing
construction and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories.
• Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines a fashion as a prevailing
custom or style.
• A fashion designer creates clothing, including dresses, suits, pants,
and skirts, and accessories like shoes and handbags, for
consumers.
• Fashion designs are influenced by culture and different trends, and
has varied over time and place.
• He or she can specialize in clothing, accessory, or jewelry design,
or may work in more than one of these areas.

What is Styling?
• A style, broadly speaking, is “a characteristic mode of presentation
that typifies several similar objects of the same category or class”
• Styles exist not only in apparel but also in architecture, painting,
music, and politics.
• We often speak of “punk,” “hippie,” “Empire,” or “Baroque”
styles.
• Some celebrities, such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Elvis Presley,
have created their own distinctive styles.

• Value of the women's wear industry: 621 billion USD
• Bridal Wear market: 57 billion USD

The global fashion e-commerce market is expected to grow
from 549.55 billion USD in 2020 to $668.1 billion USD in 2021
and is expected to reach $1207.23 billion in 2025, The growth is
mainly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

Indian Fashion Industry
• The Indian textiles and apparel industry contributed 2% to the
GDP, 12% to export earnings and held 5% of the global trade in
textiles and apparel in 2019.
• The share of the India’s textiles and apparel exports in mercantile
shipments was 11% in 2019-20.
• Indian Textiles & Fashion industry has around 4.5 crore employed
workers including 35.22 lakh handloom workers across the
country.
• The domestic textiles and apparel market stood at an estimated
USD100 billion in FY19-20.

The Apparel Designer

An apparel, clothing, or fashion designer creates


women’s, men’s, juniors, children’s, and layette
apparel, including dresses, casual wear, separates,
suits, sportswear, knits, eveningwear, formalwear,
outerwear, bridal, intimates, maternity, and swimwear,
and usually specializes in one of the aforementioned
function areas.

An accessory designer creates products such as


handbags, belts, scarves, hats, eyewear, and hosiery
that will be used
to complement clothing

The Footwear Designer

A footwear designer creates various styles of shoes,


including flats, loafers, clogs, moccasins, sling
backs, pumps, eveningwear shoes, sandals, wedges,
espadrilles, boots, sneakers, and slippers
that will be used to complement clothing.

The Technical Designer

• A technical designer is responsible for establishing and


maintaining technical specifications across one or more
product categories and for ensuring consistency in fit.
• A technical designer will attend design and staff
meetings, direct and lead fit sessions, and produce
technical packages (also known as “tech packs”) that
communicate the measurements and specifications
needed to produce a sample.
The CAD Designer
• A computer-aided design (CAD) designer is responsible for
creating prints and patterns through original artwork, re-
colorations, re-workings, and repeats.
• One major responsibility is participation in initial brainstorming
design meetings, to understand concepts, themes, fabrics,
silhouettes, and color stories.
• the CAD designer will use a CAD software program to execute
flat sketches, prints, look book sheets, detail sheets, and
conceptual board and color sheets; create color palettes; and
make revisions as needed until all designs have been approved.
The Textile Designer
• A textile designer uses CAD software to create and
execute fabric designs for woven, knit, and printed fabrics,
trims, and embroideries used to make apparel.
• Major responsibilities include researching the latest trends
in fabric, silhouettes, and color; attending various fabric
trade shows across the country and internationally;
reviewing prototypes and strike-offs; approving final
designs; and communicating with overseas mills.
The Costume Designer

Costume designers are fashion designers who design and


create customized costumes for film, television, performing
arts and stage productions, fashion shows, special events,
or other performances for “talent” or show business
personalities, actors, models, singers, dancers, and other
performers.

The Fashion Stylist

• The Fashion Stylist main responsibilities include


providing fashion advice, choosing and co-ordinating outfits
for models in photo shoots or actors in television and film and
choosing props and accessories and preparing them for
events or shoots.
• Fashion stylists work for individuals, fashion houses and
clothing brands.

The Fashion Stylist
• Fashion stylists stay on top of the latest trends in
the fashion community so that they can dress clients
appropriately
• The celebrity stylist holds many roles, such as fashion
consultant, personal shopper and style advisor. The stylist
works with his or her clients in many situations and capacities
as well, from red carpet events and commercial shoots to
shopping and salon trips.

reaching its peak quickly, and then suddenly dies out.
• Classics are widely accepted and stay in fashion for an extended period of time, with
some slight variation.
• Indian Textiles & Fashion industry has around 4.5 crore employed workers including
35.22 lakh handloom workers across the country.
• Fashion has been influenced by Fashion icons, societal changes, historical events and
movies.
• Fashion moves from elite to general (Tickle down), general public to elite(tickle up).
