Objectives:

In this section, the students will learn about how to write a body
paragraph. By the end of this session, the students are able to:
1. Explain the component of body paragraphs
2. Develop body parapagrps from a thesis statement

The Purpose of the Body Paragraph

 In essays, body paragraphs are the sections of text that


provide evidence to support the thesis statement.
 On the other words, a body paragraph is some
paragraphs in the essay that come after introduction and
before the conclusion.

 Fosle (2014) stated that each paragraph in the body of an essay


includes a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
 The topic sentence tells the reader the main topic of the paragraph.

 The topic sentence also gives the reader information about the
writer’s purpose.
 The topic sentence will be supported by some supporting
sentences.
 Common supporting sentences give more explanation, examples,
reasons, facts about the topic.

The Importance of Body Paragraph


 The body paragraph plays a very important role in
proving the essay thesis presented in the
introduction.
 In body paragraph, the writer gives the elaboration of
the thesis statement by giving argument, opinion,
and thoughts.
 A body paragraph consists of topic sentence,
supporting sentences and concluding sentence.

 Each topic sentence of the body paragraph will include


one of the ideas from the thesis statement in the
introduction paragraph.
 Each topic sentence will be supported by supporting
sentences which are given in the form of explanation,
examples, and evidence.
 Each paragraph of the body should be completed by
conclusion or concluding paragraph.

Topic Sentence

 Topic sentence is a sentence that state the main idea of


a paragraph.
 Topic sentence includes the topic and controlling idea or
main idea which show the opinion of the writer about the
topic.
 The controlling idea of the topic sentence of the body
paragraph is obtained from the thesis statement.

Supporting details/ supporting sentences


 Supporting sentences are the sentences that make
up the body of a paragraph.
 The supporting sentences prove and enhance the
controlling idea of the topic sentence by giving facts,
statistics, reasons, quotations or examples.
 The type of supporting sentences will depend on
what and why you are writing.

Concluding Sentence

 Concluding sentence should remind the reader to the


main idea of the topic.
 Concluding sentence can be written by restating the
main idea.
 You should not introducing the new idea in the
concluding sentence.

Start with determining


the thesis statement.
The usefulness of Smart Phones in the Classroom

Smartphones are becoming a part of every day life. They


are used for various reasons and are even being used more
often in the classroom. Being able to check facts, take test,
and make presentations are some ways that smart phones
are usefull in the classroom.

The thesis statement of the introductory paragraph above is “Being


able to check facts, take test, and make presentations are
some ways that smart phones are useful in the classroom.”

There are three main ideas stated in the thesis statement above.
Those main ideas will be developed in the body paragraphs:
a. check facts
b. take tests
c. make presentation

Composing the topic sentence from


the main ideas

a. Composing the topic sentence using the first main idea.

To write the first body paragraph, you must write the topic
sentence using the first main idea: check facts. The possible topic
sentence can be: “One of the most common usage of smartphone
is for looking up facts and information”

After determining the topic sentence, you need to


brainstorm what kind of checking facts that the smartphone
can do.

using the third main idea
 To write the third body paragraph, you must compose the
topic sentence of the third main idea: make presentation.
 The possible topic sentence can be : “ Finaly the
smartphone is capable of bring used to give presentation
in the classroom.”
 Next, you need to brainstorm the second main idea: make
presentation.
