BLUES

• Blues was created by African


Americans in the early 20th century. It
was originally created in the South U.S.
• Blues is a musical form characterized by the use of notes played or sung at
a low frequency, with expressive purposes and repetitive structure.
The Blues talked about overcoming the difficult life of the
countryside, dealing with racism, exposing feelings and
protesting the oppression
• Origins:
• the Blues came about when slaves from
the southern US cotton farms, around
1870 , created and sang slow, tearful
melodies that showed the expression of a
despised people. Blues is basically the
music of blacks brought from Africa to
the United States.
It aimed to soften their work and also
remind them of its origin.
• The Blues was not popularized before
the American Civil War.
Blues developed in some principal regions such as Georgia,
Texas, Carolinas and Mississippi each one with your own
features.
• With the World Wars and crises, the
Southern black man went to the
northern cities mainly in major
industrial centers like Chicago and
Detroit, taking the blues influence
with then
Chicago's Blues grew up in closed
clubs and bars, becoming more shrill,
electrified, and jarring than
traditional Southern acoustic blues
so guitars, keyboards, percussion,
and bass began to be used to
accompany the singers.

William Christopher Handy


(Florence, November 16, 1873 -
New York, March 28, 1958) was an
American composer and musician,
considered the "father of the
Blues“.Willian’s most important
songs are "Memphis Blues" ( in
1912) and "The St Louis Blues"
(1914)
B.B King is the author of such classics as "The Thrill Is Gone," "Three O'Clock Blues," "How
Blue Can You Get," "Rock Me Baby." Just like W.C Handy, B.B King was a Blues legend, one of
the most influential of this genre
Muddy Waters had a deep, rich
voice, a charismatic personality and
the support of excellent musicians,
Waters quickly became the most
famous figure in the Chicago Blues.
Even B. B. King would later refer to
him as the “Chicago Chief”
Curiosity
• The first blues recordings were
made in the 1920s by black
women such as Mamie Smith, Ma
Rainey, Ida Cox, and Bessie
Smith. Their style is known
as classic blues.
