Introduction
“Oedipus Rex” by the ancient Greek Playwright
Sophocles.
Oedipus is a timeless work of literature that
continues to resonate the audience till now. It
explores profound questions and lightens the role
of destiny in shaping our lives through its
compelling plot, complex characters, and thought-
provoking themes.
The Play remains a powerful examination of fate,
free will, consequences of one’s life and most
importantly how ignorance and not-knowing can
change one’s life.

13 Century BCE |The play takes place during the reign of King Oedipus
Location
Ancient Greece, The city Of Thebes
• As the story starts, we first learn about the land called "Theba", a land that was
worshipped god Apollos. We learn that this story is set in ancient Greece and their
manner of speech is impacted by that as they speak of the gods in their own way and
go to their kings seeking salvation. The hero of this story seems to be Oedipus, a
beloved, righteous ruler.

• After learning the place, time, and our hero's identity, we get introduced to the story
itself and what ails its people and protagonist. We are told that the trees bared no fruit
and women birthed no children. The land itself seemed like it had become an old sad
woman with no ability to spring forth life into this world, the people are distressed.

Point of attack
The point of attack in “Oedipus Rex” occurs This point of attack propels the action of

The Conflict
The Conflict
The central conflict of the play revolves around
Oedipus’ search for the truth about his identity
and the source of the plague and the horrifying
prophecy that he has fulfilled. As he learns the
truth about his past he becomes entangled in a
web of deception and discovers that he himself
is the cause of the curse on Thebes.
The conflict also arises from Oedipus’s desire to
defy fate and his relentless pursuit of
knowledge. Which ultimately leads to his
downfall.

The Climax
The Climax
The climax of the play occurs when Oedipus
finally learns the full extent of his actions and
their consequences, when he realizes the
horrifying truth about his past and his
unwitting fulfillment of the prophecy. It is
during the moment that he discovers that he
has killed is father, King Laius, and married
his mother, Queen Jocasta. The revelation
shatters Oedipus’ world leading to a moment
of intense emotional and psychological
turmoil for his character

The solution
The solution
The solution of the conflict comes in two
forms.
Firstly, Oedipus’s self-imposed punishment, as
he blinds himself and renounces his position as
king. His self-inflicted blindness represents his
newfound awareness and the heavy burden
guilt that he bears.
Secondly, Oedipus goes into exile, distancing
himself from Thebes and its people seeking
redemption for his unwitting sins.
