ETS(Electric Taxiing System)

OBJECTIVE
 The primary reason for choosing an electric towing system is that we can reduce the
combustion of fuel (approximately 2,23,200L per year), if we convert the taxiing
system to a completely electric towing system.

 Airline cause 2% of the world’s CO2 emission, and ground support equipment’s role
in this shouldn’t be underestimated.

 No Noise With An Electric Powered Aircraft Tug :

An electric motor does its job silently and without adding to the general racket of
hangars and airports. Soothing for everybody’s nerves and health.

ETS(Electric Taxiing System)

INTRODUCTION
 Electric taxiing systems are based on the idea of additional electric engines used for
moving aircraft around airports without the need to start main engines.
 Introducing a completely electric towing machine in the aviation industry will result
in the reduction of fuel wastage. It is not possible to automate towing in an airport
because of the complexity of airplane landing and taking off every minute. The
existing technology involved in pushback requires fuel for its operation and to
overcome that an electric towing machine can be used. A basic design of
components is illustrated to achieve our goals. The weight of the aircraft, the weight
of the electric towing system, force, thrust, lift, drag rolling resistance, motors and
battery are calculated by making necessary assumptions. A powertrain model is used
to simulate the output using Simulink MATLAB. The output determines the torque
characteristics and the speed characteristics of the electric towing system.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Existing System
Movement of large aircraft about the airport, flight line, and hangar is usually
accomplished by towing with a tow tractor (sometimes called a “tug”). In the case of
small aircraft, some moving is accomplished by hand pushing on the correct areas of
the aircraft.
A pushback tractor used to move large aircraft tends to weigh up to 54 tones
(119,000 pounds) and has a drawbar pull of 334 kN (75,000 lbf). An increased level of
visibility can also be achieved, as the driver’s cabin can often be raised during the
reversing process, whilst it can usually be lowered to ensure that it fits underneath
aircraft, too.
This modern styled, unique tractor features a 243 kW diesel engine that can be
converted from diesel to electric.

CONCLUSION AND FUTURE

ENHANCEMENT
An electric powertrain is designed and simulated which is capable of towing

up to 286000 kg that is the weight of an Airbus A380-800. Actual data of the
motor is used from verified sources and the following results are obtained.
The designed powertrain is capable of towing the aircraft for 18 minutes and it
reaches its top speed of 1.6 m/s at about 10 seconds. And the velocity remains
constant until the battery drains out completely. The designed powertrain is
capable of towing the aircraft for 18 minutes and can travel a total distance of
1742 m (i.e. 1.7 km) until the battery runs out.
 The powertrain can be further modified by including a more powerful motor
setup and a high battery configuration to get the best performance. Future
enhancements like more battery capacity would deliver high performance and
stability.
