WILCOXON SIGNED RANK TEST
• This non- parametric test is an alternative for the for the
parametric t- test for dependent or correlated means. This test
measures the difference between two related samples taken
from one population.
• Let’s say there are 10 students in one group. Their gardes for
midterm are the first sample and their grades for the final term
are the second sample. If the researcher is interested to
determine if there is a difference between the midterm and final
grades of the 10 students, the Wilcoxon matched-pairs sign test
si the appropriate test to use.
• To compute if there is a significant difference between the said
samples, find the difference of the 1 st and 2nd samples, then
rank them accordingly from the smallest to the highest
regardless of the sign (+/-). The usual procedure in ranking is
used when there are ties in ranks. After the ranking is made,
determine the summation of positive and negative ranks. The
smaller the data are taken as Wilcoxon’s T statistics. To
interpret the results, when the T, is greater than with the small T,
there is a significant difference. Reject the null hypothesis. If the
T differs from the T, there is no significant difference. Do not
reject the null hypothesis. The formula to compute the T is as
follows.
• However, when the population is between 7 and 25, use the
critical T value on the desired level of significance. Let us
consider the data below to illustrate the computation.
Student Midterm Final grades difference Rank
grades
1 83 85 -2 -2.5
2 81 80 1 1
3 90 88 2 2.5
4 83 87 -4 -4.5
5 78 82 -4 -4.5
6 75 84 -9 -6
7 79 79 0
8 80 80 0
• In our data, the summation of positive ranks is 3.5 and the
summation of the negative ranks is 17.5 . To determine if the
smaller T(3.5) is the same or not with the T, let us compute the
T using our formula.
