 Three distinct political groups occupied Kansas :
 Pro slavery .
 Free States.
 Abolitionists.
 Violence broke out between these opposing factions and continued
until Kansas entered the Union as a free State .
 This era became forever known as Bleeding Kansas.
THE MISSOURIE COMPROMISE

The Missourie Compromise gave the


States the authority to decide whether
they wanted to be a free or a slave
state.
THE FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT
The Fugitive Slave Act gave slave owners the
freedom to travel to the north to capture any
slave who had escaped from the southern
plantations.
GETTYSBURG SPEECH

Abraham Lincoln urged for the abolition of


slavery in his famous Gettysburg Speech,
after seeing the vast bloodshed on the
battlefield of Gettysburg.
EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION.

Abraham Lincoln declared slavery illegal in the


Southern States by his Emancipation
Proclamation.
