Properties of a Normal Curve

1. It is symmetrical about the x .
2. The mean, median and mode are equal.
3. The tails or ends are asymptotic relative to the horizontal line.
4. The total area under the normal curve is 1 or 100%.
5. There are at least three standard scores both on the left and right side of the mean.
Converting Normal Score to Standard Score
Since the normal curve is a theoretical distribution as stated earlier, no variable will perfectly fit into it.
However, the utility of its properties to describe a certain normally distributed variable can be made by
transforming the latter into standard normally distributed variable which means converting the normal
scores into standard score using the formula below:
x  x
z= where z = standard score
s
x = mean
s = standard deviation
X = given value of a particular variable
Find the corresponding standard score for: x = 80 and x = 50
1. Find the area under the normal curve from z = 0 to z = 1.32.

2. Find the area to the right of z = 1.32

Find the area to the left of z = 1.32

Find the area between z1 = -1.32 and z2 = 1.32

Find the area between z = 0.5 and z = 1.32

Find the area under the normal curve from z = 0.81 to z = 1.94
Word Problems:
1. The average weekly income of 2,000 workers is PHP 1,510 with a
standard deviation of PHP 150. Assuming that the weekly incomes are
normally distributed, find the number of workers who earn:
a. From Php 1,195 to Php 1,555 per week
b. Less than or equal to Php 1,275 per week
c. Greater than or equal to Php 1,855 per week
