 Preterit of ir and ser

The verbs ser and ir have identical forms in

the preterit. The context of the sentence or
the situation will clarify the meaning.

ser,  fui fuimos

ir fuiste fuisteis
fue fueron
Notice that the first- and third-persons singular,
fui and fue, do not bear a written accent because
they are just one syllable.

 Preterit of ir and ser

One way to differentiate between ir and

ser is that ir is often followed by the
preposition a.

Yo fui a la tienda para

comprar un nuevo vestido.
I went to the store to
buy a new dress.
