DESCRIBE THE MARLINSPIKE
SEAMANSHIP SKILLS AND
RIGGINGS IN ACCORDANCE WITH
SHIPBOARD INSTRUCTION AND
SAFETY STANDARDS.
WHAT IS MARLINSPIKE SEAMANSHIP?

marlinespike seamanship are

umbrella terms for a skillset
spanning the use, maintenance,
and repair of rope. Ropework
is used by seafarers, climbers
and military personnel.
Included are tying knots,
splicing, making lashings,
whippings, and proper use and
storage of rope.
• The name marlinespike is
derived from the tool that is
used for splicing. It can be a
tapered metal pin or carved of
wood .

• Once a rope is onboard a boat

and is given a specific purpose and
is given a specific purpose
such as dock line, halyard, etc.
It is called a line, not a rope.
WHAT IS LINE?
Line is a nautical term used
to describe a length of rope
used for marine and boating
purposes.

WIRE ROPE
very strong, has

RIGGING
Rigging comprises the system of ropes,
cables and chains, which support a sailing
ship or sail boat's masts—standing
rigging, including shrouds and stays—
and which adjust the position of the
vessel's sails and spars to which they are
attached—the running rigging, including
halyards, braces, sheets and vangs.
• Boat rigging systems are
primarily comprised of
components that can
effectively support the masts
of a sailing ship or a sailboat
and modify the position of the
vessel's sails and spars. These
systems essentially ensure that
the ship or the boat is already
ready for proper use.
TYPES OF RIGGING
Rigging is divided into two classes,
standing, which supports the mast (and
bowsprit), and running, which controls the
orientation of the sails and their degree of
reefing. Configurations differ for each type
of rigging, between fore-and-aft rigged
vessels and square-rigged vessels.
PILOT'S LADDER
Flexible portable
ladder, usually
constructed of metal,
sturdier than a Jacob's
Ladder.
SAFETY STANDARD
• Pilot ladders are to be regularly inspected for wear
and tear of side ropes, missing wedges, and
damages on the steps. The steps should never be
painted and should be kept clean, free from oil and
grease. All the steps should be equally spaced
between the side ropes and the distance between
two steps should be uniform.
ACCOMMODATION LADDER
Rigid, inclined ladder
rigged to the side of the
ship to allow boarding
of a moored or anchored
ship.
SAFETY STANDARD
• Accommodation ladders should not be used at
angles greater than 55 degrees from the horizontal,
unless designed and constructed for use at angles
greater than these and marked as such. Adequate
lighting, lifebuoys and a mounted safety net
sufficient to prevent falls must be provided.
JACOB'S LADDER
Rope ladder w/rungs
rigged over the side
for temporary use.
SAFETY STANDARD
• Jacob's ladders must have a flat tread or a
two double rungs. They must be carefully
guarded and kept up. A Jacob's ladder
must either completely be pulled up or
hang from its lashings without any slack.
MONKEY LADDER
Monkey ladder is a light ladder to
the monkey bridge on a ship. The
ladder steps consisting of two
parallel members connected by
rungs; for climbing up or down.
This ladder is been customized as
per the requirement of the User.
RIGGING STAGE
• A rigging or plank stage,
suspended at each end by rope
lanyards, are used to support
men when working over the
ship's side, or on the
superstructure and funnels.
SAFETY STANDARD
• A boatswain's chair should always be
rigged with a pair of single sheave pulley
block, having a safe working load of at
least 225kg. Outriggers and other
supports must be strong enough, and be
securely fastened down.
