JULIA DONALDSON

• Julia Donaldson is an English writer,


playwright and performer, and the
2011–2013 Children’s Laureate. She is
best acknowledged for her popular
rhyming stories for children,
particularly those illustrated by Axel
Scheffler, which include The Gruffalo,
Room on the Broom, and Stick Man.
ALEX SCHEFFLER

• Alex Scheffler was born in Hamburg,


West Germany, in 1957. He began
studying Art History at the University
of Hamburg but dropped out, deciding
instead to do alternative National
Service. He moved to England in 1982,
when he was twenty five years old to
study Visual Communications at the
Bath Academy of Art in Corsham,
Wiltshire.
PRE-READING STAGE

• Guess the story


• Look at the cover and title of the picture book and predict
with your classmates what the story might be about. Answer
the questions.

1) What do you see in the cover?


2) What catches your eyes first?
3) What are the mouse and the Gruffalo doing? Where can
they be?
• 4) What does the title suggest?
• 5) What do you think this story is about?
• 6) What do you think could happen in this picture book?
7) What do you know about Gruffalo? Are they animals or not?
What kind of animal is Gruffalo? Where does Gruffalo live?
8) What do you know about mice? Where do they live?
9) Are mice usually associated with weakness?
10) Do they stand out from the rest of the animals in the woods?
11) What’s the size of a mouse? And of a Gruffalo?
• 12) So if we compare the size of a mouse with a Gruffalo, how
different are they?

• Brainstorming
• Look at the cover and write words in your notebook related to
it. Share your ideas with your classmates. 💡

• Visual prediction
• Before turning each page, predict with your
classmates what might happen next based
on the current illustration.

• Stop and explain


• After each page, explain with your own
words the scene.
POST-READING STAGE

• Genre transfer
• From picture book to role play. Choose a character and role play
its dialogue with your classmates. Use expressive voiced and
gestures to bring the characters to life.

• Alternative ending
• Invent a different ending for the story. In other words, in what
other ways could the Gruffalo story end? Create, draw and color
and illustration for your alternative ending.
