abstract
Deep learning has remarkably impacted several different scientific
disciplines over the last few years. For example, in image processing
and analysis, deep learning algorithms were able to outperform other
cutting-edge methods, Deep learning is also showing vast potential in
the medical domain. With the collection of large quantities of patient
records and data, The abundance of collected patient data and the
recent growth in the deep learning field has resulted in a large
increase in research efforts.

3
INTRODUCTION

Medical deep learning refers to the application of

deep learning techniques, a subset of machine
learning, to the field of medicine and healthcare. Deep
learning algorithms are particularly well-suited for
tasks that involve large amounts of complex data,
such as medical images, electronic health records
(EHRs), and genomic data.

6
What is deep learning?

Deep learning is a
subfield of machine
learning focusing on
learning data
representations as
successive layers of
increasingly meaningful
representations.

Medical imaging

Medical imaging covers the field of producing visual

representations of the internal body, for example
using computed tomography, magnetic resonance
imaging or ultrasound, just to name a few

12
segmentation

Deep learning is employed

for segmenting and
delineating structures or
regions of interest in medical
images, aiding in treatment
planning and surgical
guidance.

. Low tissue contrast
. Low spatial resolution

Outcome Prediction
Brain Tumor Patient’s Survival Time Prediction

• High-grade gliomas
– One of most deadly tumors with fast grow rate and poor prognosis
– Pre-operative outcome prediction with high accuracy is critical for better treatment planning

A medical deep learning dataset refers
to a curated collection of structured
and labeled data specifically designed
for training, validating, and testing
DATASETS FOR deep learning models in the field of
MEDICAL DEEP medicine and healthcare. These
LEARNING datasets typically consist of various
types of medical data, such as images
(MRI, CT scans, X-rays), pathology
slides, genomic sequences, electronic
health records (EHR), and other
relevant information.

STUDIES IN MEDICAL DECISION MAKING

20
Review and survey articles for medical deep learning in
PubMed over the years (status as of August 2020).

21
General Challenges
 The lack of in-domain datasets.
 Sharing the data and privacy.
 Interpretability of the models.
 Sensitivity of medical scenarios.

22
conclusion

Finally, deep learning is data-driven, which means it

lives and dies by the amount of data it is fed, hence,
the increasingly number of public medical databases,
like the Cancer Imaging Archive or the Human
Connectome Project, can be seen as very import
driving forces behind the translation of deep learning
into the medical domain.
